in Columbus, Mississippi on August 27, 1927, the oldest of three children produced by the marriage of Sarah and Henry Brownlee, Sr. He departed this life on Sunday, December 2, 2001, at the age of seventy-four (74), in Birmingham, Alabama.
Sgt. Brownlee's family moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama when he was a child. He attended public school in Tuscaloosa and later worked at the Central Foundry Company in suburban Holt, Ala bama, along with his father until he enlisted in the United States Army in 1953.
During his twenty-one (21) years in the Army, Sgt. Brownlee was a soldier's soldier, serving with great honor in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. An expert marksman, Sgt. Brownlee was recog nized with the following awards: the National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Service Medal with five Bronze Service Stars, four Overseas Bars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Unit Com mendation and five Good Conduct Medals.
Sgt. Brownlee furthered his education and training while enlisted in the Army. He received a graphics arts diploma from the Au gusta Area Technical School, attended a management-training course in Ansbach, Germany and was enrolled in a Non-Com missioned Officer's leadership class in Wurzburg, Germany.
Three years ago, Sgt. Brownlee was united in marriage with his childhood sweetheart, Mrs. Martha L. Brownlee. He was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Earl and Gary Brownlee. A third son, Alfred, lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. Growing up, they were known around Tuscaloosa, Alabama, as "The Brownlee Boys".
In addition to his wife, Sgt. Brownlee is survived by: a brother, James Edward (Beatrice) Brownlee of Tuscaloosa, AL; an infor mally adopted daughter, Alisia LaVette Sermons of Atlanta, GA; seven grandchildren by "The Brownlee Boys", Kim, Alfred, Jr., Gerilyn, Shauntae, LaTonya, Demetrius and Warren; eleven great grandchildren; also cherishing his memories are his relatives, ex tended family members and friends.
