The Obituary
John started work in retail at the young age of thirteen to help support his family. He began working for K-Mart on Gordon Hwy in 1966 and became a manager for the S.S. Kresge Co. and K-Mart, opening new stores up and down the east coast for seventeen years. John's true love, however, was police work and his hometown.
He returned to Augusta in 1982 to work as a patrolman at the Augusta Police Department. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1985 and received numerous awards. Eventually he helped found and was in charge of the "Tfennis Shoe Boys", a task force to curb drug trafficking and violence in Augusta, which gained nationwide attention.
John was instrumental in getting the DARE program set up in Richmond County Schools, which led to him being promoted to Lieutenant in 1993 and he was put in charge of vice and narcotics. He stayed in investigations with the Richmond County Sheriffs Department until his retirement in 2002.
John was very devoted to his sons and family. He liked gardening and sports and enjoyed cooking breakfast for his sons and their friends. He always had jokes for everyone and tried to be a role model for the young kids in the neighborhood.
He was preceded in death by his father, Johnnie A. Brown Sr. Survivors are: his wife, Ingeborg; sons, John A. (Brenda) Brown III, Ellicot City, MD, Pierre M. The Broken Chain
- A uthor U nknown -
We little knew that morning, God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly, In death, we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone. For part o f us went with you, The day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide. And although we cannot see you,
You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again.
Words of Thanks
Any kind words spoken, calls received to express condolences are all appreciated. Those kind gestures are not forgotten, we will always remember and hold dear to our hearts all of your expressions o f love. - T he F am ily
