We have come today to honor the life of our loved one who passed from mortality into immortality on Thursday, December 7, 1989, at Self Memorial Hospital, Greenwood, S.C.
Henry "Buddy" Bates was born January 23, 1908, to the late Moses and Susie Simpkins Bates. He lived his entire life in Saluda County, Saluda, South Carolina. He was united in holy wedlock to Maria Campbell Bates. To this union seven children were born.
As long as his health prevailed, he was a devoted member of the Lockhart Baptist Church. Mr. Bates was a retired farmer and attended the Bates school. Mr. Bates always did all he was capable for his family, friends and neighbors. His generosity was a loving part of him. He labored hard and long and now he is at rest.
He leaves to mourn his passing a devoted wife, Mrs. Maria C. Bates; seven children, Mrs. Susie Bell B. Craig, St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. William Henry Bates, Greenwood, S.C., Jessie James Bates, Greenwood, S.C., Annie Ruth B. Freeman, Saluda, S.C., Rosie M. Bates, St. Louis, Missouri, Esther Lee B. Bush, Columbia, S.C., Mary Delois B. Dukes, Saluda, S.C.; 2 grandchildren raised in the home, Ernestine Bates of the home and Priscilla B. Cheeks, Columbia, S.C.; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sons-in-law, Robert F. Freeman, Johnny E. Dukes, Saluda, S.C., and George E. Bush, Columbia, S.C.; one daughter-in-law, Emmie L. Bates,-Greenwood, S.C.; seven sisters-in-law; 3 brothers-in-law; a number of nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.
