OBITUARY
MR. ERVIN SAMUEL BARTLEY, entered into eternal rest Tuesday at St. Michael Hospital in New Haven, Connec ticut after a short illness.
He was born in St. Matthews, S. C., and was the son of Mrs. Mable Owens Bartley and the late Mr. Ervin S. Bartley.
At an early age he joined Bethel A. M. E. Church, St. Matthews, S. C., and served faithful until moving from this community. After leaving this community, he affiliated him self with the following churches: Howard Chapel A. M. E. Church, New Zion, S. C., Mt. Pisgah A. M. E. Church, Sumter, S. C., and Bethel A. M. E. Church, New Haven, Conn. He serv ed in many capacities.
He attended the St. Matthews Public Schools and gradu ated from Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg, S. C. He re ceived his B. S. Degree in Science from Allen University, Co lumbia, S. C. He did further studies at S. C. State College, Orangeburg, S. C.
He was a public school teacher in Clarendon County for many years. At the time of his passing he was employed as teacher in New Haven, Connecticut Public Schools System. He had great interest in the education of the disadvantaged youth of the community.
He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, a Master Mason and a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Virginia Howard Bart ley of New Haven, Conn.; mother, Mrs. Mable Owens Bartley of New York, N. Y.; two aunts, Mrs. Hennie O. Parker and Mrs. Sadie Snyder of St. Matthews, S. C.; one uncle, Mr. Clarence Owens of Washington, D. C.; other relatives and friends.
So live, that when thy summons comes to join The innumerable caravan, which moves To that mysterious realm, where each shall take His chamber in the silent halls of death, Thou go not, like the quarry -- slave at night, Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.
