CW2 (RETIRED) JOHNNIE PERCY BALL, JR. was born June 12,1940 in Joiner, Arkansas to the late Johnnie and Martha Ball, Sr.
At the age of ten, he was baptized at Beautiful Zion Baptist Church in West Memphis, Arkansas and in 1969 he united with Tabernacle Baptist Church where he served faithfully for the remainder of his life.
Johnnie received his high school diploma from Wonder High School in West Memphis. After completing his secondary education, his ambition and fortitude led him to join the United States Army in 1962 where he completed many military schools. Further study was done at Georgia Military College allowing him to earn an associates degree in business administration.
Johnnie served his country for over twenty-three years. He served in the Vietnam War and completed tours of duty in both Germany and Korea. During his military career, he earned the following awards, decorations and medals: Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal- 6th Award, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon (1), NCO Professional Development Ribbon (1), Vietnam Service Medal with six campaign stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam's Cross of Gallantry with palm, and Overseas Service Bars (4). Following a distinguished military career, CW2 (Retired) Johnnie Percy Ball, Jr. worked at the U.S. Post Office for ten years and then along with his wife started Ball's Enterprises, a construction company, which they administered for ten years.
Giving back to the community was important to Johnnie and he fulfilled this need through both his civic and religious service. His eagerness to serve led him to positions of Sunday school teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, President of the June Birth Month Club, member of the J. H. Ruffin Sunday School Class, and a participant in both the Men's Choir and the R. A. Dent Choir at Tabernacle Baptist Church. He also gave over 35 years of faithful service as a Deacon. Johnnie was a member of Radcliff, Kentucky's Lions Club, the American Legion Post 235, the Warrant Officers Association as well as serving as the 1st Vice President of the Augusta Chapter of the NAACP.
Johnnie's final weeks were full of love and laughter as he spent time in fellowship with family and friends in Virginia and Florida.
He leaves to cherish his legacy: a faithful and dedicated wife, Shirlene Bennett Ball; two loving children, Shanda (Isaac) Ball Edwards and Johnny (Terri ) Percy Ball, III; four adoring grandchildren, Shayla Edwards, Alisha Diane Edwards, Johnny Percy Ball IV (Jay) and Lauren Grace Ball; two brothers, James (Myrtre) Ball and Solomon (Lula Mae) Ball, Sr.; four sisters-in-law, Aretha Cross, Mae Ida Birt, Betty Roundtree and Allene (Bonny) Walker; three brothers-in-law, Eugene Walker, Leroy (Azelma) Bennett and Hyland (Joyce) Bennett; one aunt, Mary Johnson; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
