A Complete Air
Transportation Service
ChicagoTwin Cities
WO years in air transportation is comparable
to two decades in other methods of trans-
portation. Tarry a moment when the air
mail, your air mail, comes along. The plane
swings up one horizon, crosses the zenith and goes
down the opposite horizon while you have been
standing there. Its average speed is 100 or more
miles an hour.
A Pioneer System
With similar speed, developments crowd to the
fore in the air industry itself. Northwest Airways,
Inc., though only two years old, is now a pioneer
air transportation system. It began operations
October 1, 1926, carrying the United States air mail
between Chicago and the Twin Cities of Minne-
apolis and Saint Paul. It continues to do this. Its
pilots know the countryside, the great beacon-
lighted airway between the Twin Cities and Chica-
go, like the engineers of the limited trains know
the steel-ribboned leagues over which they drive
their locomotives from Mid-America to the coast.
Travel by Air Increases
Naturally people, more and more people, began
taking to the air. Soon the sturdy and reliable
air-mail planes of the Northwest Airways, with
500,000 miles of flying to their credit without mis-
hap, could not handle the passenger business.
The next step, therefore, was to put more planes
in service. In doing so. Northwest Airways inaug-
urated a new de luxe, non-stop passenger service,
using big tri-motored Ford planes, each capable of
carrying 14 passengers and each manned by veteran
United States air mail pilots. ,
Air-Rail Service
And Northwest Airways linked up this de luxe
service with the railway schedules in a co-ordinated
air-rail passenger service, the first in history.
That is how Northwest Airways non-stop pas-
senger service between the Twin Cities and Chicago
came into existencemarking an epoch in air
transportation.
Northwest Airways a complete air transportation
service between Chicago and the Twin Cities, passen-
er service, express, air mail.
Northwest Airways
Non - Stop
Passenger Service
T win Cities-Chicago
Northwest Airways, Inc., operates two daily services be-
tween the Twin Cities and Chicago: The non-stop passenger
service and the U. S. airmail passenger service.
First in the World
The non-stop passenger service is the first co-ordinated
air-rail service in world transportation. It enables east and
westbound passengers to save a day in travel time. Lines
using this joint air-rail service include the Great Northern
Railway, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Rail-
road and the Northern Pacific Railway.
Passengers can leave their train at Chicago, Saint Paul or
Minneapolis, take a Northwest Airways plane and make the
hop of 350 non-stop miles between the Twin Cities and Chi-
cago in less than four hours on the synchronized air-rail
schedules now in effect. These schedules are shown on Page 7.
All-Metal Cabin Planes
Ford all-metal, enclosed cabin planes embodying the most
recent approved developments in air-craft construction are
used in this non-stop passenger service.
The planes are powered with three 410 H. P. Pratt-Whitney
Wasp motors with ample reserve power. Their maximum
speed is 135 to 140 miles an hour and average cruising speed
115 miles an hour. Capacity is 14 passengers and pilot and
reserve pilot. Large, comfortable upholstered chairs are
provided. An unobstructed view is provided through the
windows. There is a smoking compartment and baggage and
toilet facilities.
Manned by Veteran Pilots
Veteran air mail pilots fly these planes. The route, under
rapid development by the United States Department of
Commerce, is equipped with a chain of beacon lights and
lighted landing fields. The beacon lights of two and one-half
million candle power are kept burning from sundown to sun-
rise. They are 10 miles apart. The landing fields are 30
miles apart and also are lighted from sundown to sunrise.
Pilots are supplied with special reports on weather conditions
just ahead on every trip.
