- Description:
- Contents of the third of five sections of a nineteenth-century ledger and scrapbook documenting work conducted at the Carpentry Shop, within the Savannah Shops complex of the Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia in Savannah, Georgia. This section of the ledger/scrapbook dates from 1860 to 1864 during the Civil War period, and contains details and financial data pertaining to the Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia. Topics include: railroad passenger cars, railroad and train maintenance, artillery (gun carriages and platforms), forges, and mail cars. It also includes information about assorted projects, materials, hours worked, and wages earned by its white laborers and enslaved African Americans. Some entries record items fabricated such as hinges, bolts, and nails for projects such as the passenger shed (now the Savannah History Museum). Parts of this section of the ledger/scrapbook beginning on page 213 (page 23 of the PDF) and extending to page 278 (page 75 of the PDF) also include newspaper clippings from the 1870s to the 1890s pasted over earlier ledger entries. The clippings include poetry, illustrations, and newspaper articles related to love, death, murder trials, funerals, and topics surrounding bereavement. An inscription written in the front flyleaf of the ledger indicates that a Miss Laura Barthelmess began the scrapbook in 1870.
