Verso: "At what is now 176 Cleburne Avenue, General Sherman had his headquarters during the Battle of Atlanta. Generals Sherman and McPherson were conversing under the trees here at noon on July 22, 1864, when the first guns of the battle roared. A few hours later, General McPherson was mortally wounded a short distance south of this place. A mounment to him stands at East Atlanta on McPherson Avenue." - External Identifiers:
