- Description:
- Black and white photograph of Dr. William Henry Crogman. He was elected as the first African American president of Clark University. He served as president from July 1, 1904 until June 1910. In 1869 Clark College was founded by the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It was named for Bishop Davis Wasgatt Clark, who was the first President of the Freedman's Aid Society and became Bishop in 1864. In 1877, Clark College was chartered as Clark University. In 1988 Clark University and Atlanta University combined to form the Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia.
