- Black and white photograph of Dr. John W.E. Bowen. In 1893 Bowen became a professor at Gammon Theological Seminary, making him the first African American to teach there full-time. On October 12, 1906 he took office as the third president of the Gammon Theological Seminary. Gammon Theological Seminary was founded in 1883 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. Gammon is The United Methodist component of a consortium of six historical African American theological schools, The Interdenominational Theological Center.
