- Chloe Landen is a PhD student in the University of Texas’s Department of Religious Studies. She studies U.S. Protestantism in the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing on the Social Gospel and narratives of national belonging. Her current project explores the intersection of religion, anti-lynching activism, and the privatization of execution by examining the Association of Southern Women for the Prevention of Lynching (ASWPL), an understudied group of white southern women. Chloe investigates how domesticity and white womanhood shaped the ASWPL’s Social Gospel worldview and their campaign to remove the ‘visible sin’ of spectacle lynching from the public sphere. Her work shows how this activism influenced the shift from public to private executions and supported national reconciliation in the years leading up to WWII. She earned her BA in Rhetoric & Writing and Religious Studies from UT Austin in 2021 and an MTS from Harvard in 2023. A Texas native, she returned to UT to study the southern Social Gospel.
