The forty original members of the Volunteers provided their own equipment, and the officers paid for the uniforms. The gray coats and pants trimmed in black that Hall is wearing cost five men $935.30. The company left for Virginia on May 3, arriving there the following day. On May 28 the Volunteers reached Richmond. Hall was promoted to 1st lieutenant the following year, but was forced to resign because of ill health in July 1862.
