- Carte-de-visite photograph of Francis H. DeGraffenreid. DeGraffenreid who went to war as a sergeant, was subsequently promoted to lieutenant, acting adjutant, and on the August1, 1862, became captain of Company E, 2th Georgia. "He was a gallant, earnest soldier," wrote a comrade, "devoted to the cause of the South and worthy of the honors he won." His left leg was torn off at Fort Steadman, Virginia, March 25, 1865, and he died in a hospital of the Army of the Potomac the following day. Gen. Philip Cook wrote: "I regret the loss in this engagement of major F. H. De Gaffenreid, Fourth Georgia Regiment, a gallant and meritorious officer, mortally wounded and left in the hands of the enemy..."
