- Carte-de-visite photograph of John E. McConnell. McConnell had begun his military career in April 1861 when he had joined the Toombs Volunteers as 1st sergeant, a company that became Company F, 4th Georgia Infantry. Promoted to brevet 2nd lieutenant in January 1862, he had stayed with the regiment until the reorganization in April 1862 when he returned to Georgia. Just weeks later, on May 10, 1862, McConnell was elected captain of Company I, 6th Georgia Cavalry.
