ENIOR BISHOP MCKINLEY YOUNG was born on November 10, 1944 in Atlanta, Georgia; the eldest son of Reverend Lonnie C. Young and Mrs. Nellie Cummings Young. His father was a pastor and church builder in the Sixth Episcopal District and his mother ran the home. At a young age, Bishop Young lost his mother and oldest sister to tuberculosis. His father later married the former Ms. Lois Kimbrough in 1956. .
A product of Atlanta Public Schools, Bishop Young graduated from David T. Howard High School in 1962. He received his bachelor's degree from Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia in 1966. While a student at Morris Brown College, he received his first assignment to Fountain Temple A.M.E. Church in Clarkston, Georgia from Bishop E. L. Hickman. In 1968,
Bishop Young attended his first General Conference as the Connectional President of the Richard Allen Youth Council (RAYC) where he, along with others, began the journey to include young people in every aspect of the A.M.E. Church and its governance.
In 1965 Bishop Young met the former Dorothy Jackson at Charles Street A.M.E. Church while he was a seminarian at Andover Newton Theological School, in Newton Centre, Massachusetts. They married September 23, 1967 and began their ministry together at Bethel A.M.E. Church in Providence, Rhode Island.
Bishop and Dorothy moved to Chicago, Illinois where he attended the University of Chicago Divinity School. He served as the pastor of St. Paul A.M.E. Church and Carey Tercentenary A.M.E. Church on the westside of Chicago. He was then appointed to Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in Evanston, Illinois and served there until 1980 when Bishop Frederick Hilborn Talbot appointed him Senior Pastor of the historic Big Bethel A.M.E. Church in Atlanta, Georgia offering Bishop Young the opportunity to return to his hometown and pastor his home church.
Bishop Young served Big Bethel from 1980 to 1992 and grew the congregation to over 1,500 members. Because of his effective leadership many major repairs and upgrades were completed. The sanctuary was remodeled, the Moller organ restored, and drums, as well as, a Hammond organ were added to enhance the worship experience. Of significant note the elevator project - spearheaded by the Usherette Board #2 - was begun and the Church became fiscally sound.
In 1990, after his release from political imprisonment, Nelson Mandela spoke at Big Bethel as part of his U.S. tour to raise money for the African National Congress.
n 1992, Bishop Young was elected and consecrated the 109th Bishop at the 44th Session of the General Conference of the A.M.E. Church. He was appointed Presiding Prelate of the Faithful Fifteenth Episcopal District and served with distinction. Bishop Young led the Church membership in the Centennial Celebration of the A.M.E. Church in Southern Africa and he participated in the reception of 12,000 members of the Angola Independent Methodist Church into the A.M.E. Church. This formed the Angola Annual Conference of the Fifteenth Episcopal District.
and Schools (SACS). Under Bishop Young's leadership the Tenth District reorganized for better oversight and district growth. Bishop Young also began the practice of Episcopal visitation to every church in each district in which he and Dr. Young served.
In July of 2004, Bishop Young was assigned to the Electrifying Eleventh Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church. Bishop Young provided faithful leadership for two Quadrenniums including Florida and the Bahamas. He led in the reorganization and strengthening of the District by going from eight to six annual conferences.
From 1996 to 2000 Bishop Young was appointed as the Ecumenical and Urban Affairs Officer for the A.M.E. Church where he served as the endorsing agent for chaplains. During this period, he provided leadership in all Ecumenical and Interfaith forums nationally and globally for the connectional Church.
In 2000, Bishop Young was appointed to serve in the Talented Tenth Episcopal District where he chaired the Board of Trustees for Paul Quinn College. Bishop Young oversaw the full accreditation of Paul Quinn College by the Southern Association of Colleges
Bishop Young and Mrs. Young worked with pastors, ministers, lay leaders, elected officials and the people of Jacksonville, Florida to elect the first black mayor, Alvin Brown. Bishop chaired, with distinction, the Board of Trustees for Edward Waters College in Jacksonville and provided leadership in the search for two college presidents, in securing the accreditation of the school, and in raising and giving Edward Waters College $2 million. This amount was in addition to the sustained support provided by the District and the denomination.
On July 4, 2012 Bishop and Mrs. Young were assigned to the Terrific Third Episcopal District embracing the great people of Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. As the Presiding Prelate of the Third District, Bishop Young served as Chancellor ofWilberforce University and Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for Payne Theological Seminary. In 2018, Bishop Young led the District in the purchase of the new $2.2 million District Headquarters located in downtown Columbus, Ohio.
ishop Young focused on Christian Education, Ministerial Education, and Continuing Education for Lay and Clergy and in strengthening the component ministries in every church and district he served. Along with Supervisor Young and the good people of the Tenth and Eleventh Districts, Bishop hosted two WMS Quadrennials and actively worked to elect excellent leadership for the Church. He worked across denominational and interfaith lines to impact local, state and national elections. This was epitomized by his work with the Concerned Black Clergy, an ecumenical group he helped to organize with other pastors while serving at Big Bethel in Atlanta, Georgia. Further, he initiated and led several comprehensive voter education, registration, and mobilization drives, which included the church community interfacing and collaborating with their state and local legislators.
Bishop Young was involved with the A.M.E. Service and Development Agency (SADA) for over 20 years
and served as the Chair of the Board for over a decade. He served as the President of the Council of Bishops and the General Board. He chaired the Commissions on Women in Ministry, Global Witness and Ministry, Annuity Investments and Insurance, and the Commission on Church Growth and Development.
He served as a member of the executive committee of the central committee of the World Council of Churches, the executive committee of the National Council of Churches, USA, the World Methodist Council, the Pan-Methodist Commission, the Consultation on Church Union and the Conference of National Black Churches.
He also served with honor and distinction as a member of the executive committee of the World Methodist
Council, the executive committee of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC) from 1998 to 2006. Bishop Young was re-elected to the central committee of the WCC at the Ninth (9th) Assembly in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 2006. He chaired the Committee on Nominations for the National Council of Churches, USA, and provided leadership for the Pan Methodist Commission (1996-2000). He most recently served on the nominating committee for the World Methodist Council. Bishop Young was a Mason, a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity and a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Bishop Young was recently preceded in death by his sister Nellie Laverne Young. He is survived by his devoted wife of over 50 years, Dr. Dorothy Jackson Young; his loving children Karyn (Ron) Young-Lowe, Deana (Julius) McAllister, Jr., Andrea (Roderick) Jones and Stephanie Lynn Young; and, his grandchildren Jennifer Renee and Jessica Christine Lowe, Julius Harrison III, Colin McKinley Young, Dylan David Jeremiah McAllister, Peyton Leigh, Noah Parker, and Miles Owen Jones.
