"A REMARKABLE LADY WIT H A REMARKABLE SPIRIT"
Ella (Mae) Gaines Yates was born in Atlanta, Georgia on June 14, 1927, the second child of Fred Douglas and Laura (Moore) Gaines. She departed this life on June 27, 2006 after a brief battle with lung cancer.
A lady of remarkable wisdom and knowledge... .learning and education were always at the forefront of her life. She received her early education in the Atlanta Public Schools, her B.A., degree from Spelman College in 1949 and her Masters in Library Science from Atlanta University in 1951 , and her Juris Doctorate from Atlanta Law School in 1979.
In 1954 she married Joseph L. Sydnor (deceased) and to this union one daughter Jerri Gaines Sydnor-Lee was born. She later married Clayton R. Yates (deceased).
Ella moved to New York in the early 1950' s where she began her professional career as a librarian. Her career began as Assistant Branch Librarian with the Brooklyn Public Library, and spanned a wide range of administrative positions and responsibilities. She rapidly moved up the professional ladder holding numerous librarian positions, public and private, in the State of New Jersey, including: Head of the Children' s Department in Orange; Branch Librarian in East Orange; Medical Librarian of the Orange Memorial Hospital; and Assistant Director in Montclair New Jersey.
Ella then moved back "home" to her beloved Atlanta where she served as Assistant Director and Director of the Atlanta -Fulton Public Library. She is remembered for her leadership when the current Main Library facility downtown was constructed and completed on schedule and under budget. In the early 1980' s, Ella moved to Seattle Washington and while there established the Yates Library Consulting Service. She was a lecturer at the University of Washington Library School and Director of the Learning Resource Center. Returning again "home", Ella served as the State Librarian for the Commonwealth of Virginia. She was the first non-Virginian, the first woman and the first African - American to hold that position. Following this experience, still very much involved in her profession as a library administrator. Ella served as the Interim Director of the Robert W. Woodruff Library, Clark-Atlanta University in Atlanta.
Wherever Ella resided, she assumed a leadership in her community. She was always characterized by colleagues, friends and family as an "awesome lady" who believed in honesty and integrity. She was a person who took great pride in her professional, civic and social affiliations , some of which included her lifetime membership in Friendship Baptist Church, Atlanta,: a proud and active member of the Booker T. Washington High School, Class of ' 44; the Administrative Board of the Library of Congress Center for the Book; Vice Chairperson of the New Jersey Women' s Council on Human Relations; Chairperson for the Friends of the Fulton County Jail; Board Directors of the United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Atlanta; member of the Freedom to Read Foundation; member of YMCA; member and Excutive Board member of the American Library Association; the Urban League, the NAACP and lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
Her support, devotion and loyalty to her Alma Mater. Spelman College, was known to all who knew her. In 1995, she received the Hall of Fame Award from the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College. Other honors include (but are not limited to) "Professional Woman of the Year", New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Woman; The Atlanta Phoenix Award; and the Mentoring Award from the Atlanta University.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories: A loving daughter Mrs. Jerri Sydnor Lee, Atlanta, Georgia; nephew Mr. Matthew Gaines, Los Angeles, California; and a granddog Precious Moments Lee.
