We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. II Corinthians 5:8
On June 2, 1999 the Lord in His infinite wisdom welcomed home to
rest his faithful servant, Joseph Aaron Withers, Sr. who was born
December 16, 1918 in Caswell County, North Carolina. Aaron was the son of Aljournal and Annie Bell Withers.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord Shall . . . be saved. Romans 10:13
Aaron confessed his belief in the Lord at an early age and became a member of Red Hill Baptist Church in Pelham, North Carolina where he loved to listen to the word and good old gospel songs. He would smile a big old smile and pat his feet.
Aaron was active in the community prior to his declining health. He served as deputy for the annual Cedar Grove Association and was often found collecting money from others in the community to give to someone in need. He had many friends who looked forward to their daily chats at Cecil's Store better known as Crossroad.
Aaron worked at the Newport News shipyard, the High Point City Maintenance department and as a farmer before retiring.
Aaron was a loving husband, father, and grandfather to those he left behind: five daughters, Anne Parker of Urbana, illinois, Alice Byrd of Ruffin, Claire Coletrane of Yanceyville, Margaret Cannon of Ruffin and Sandy Douglas of Greensboro; one son Joseph Aaron Withers, Jr. of Reidsville; two sisters, Mildred and Henrietta Withers of Ruffin; two brothers, Allie Withers of Washington, D.C. and Ivan Withers of Newport News, VA.
Aaron was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Maggie Howard Withers, one sister, his parents and two brothers.
God chose to give him five devoted and loving sons-in-law and one daughter-in-law, Paul Parker, Sr., the late Joe Byrd, Sr., Leon Coletrane, Ulysses Cannon, John Douglas and Theon Withers. He was blessed with 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild, Paul Parker , Jr. , Kenneth Parker, Aaron Byrd, Lamont Cannon, Monica Cannon, Freddy Cannon, Crystal Gwynn, Candice Coltrane, Alton Ellison, Jerry Walker, Robin Slade, Joe Alvis Byrd and Aaron Byrd, Jr. He is survived by sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
That being justified by His grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
