James P.tfwartf 'Winfrey, Sr., was
born September 26,1949, in Somerville, TN to the late Jessie and Annie Bell Winfrey. He was educated in the Fayette County School System. At the age of 18, he entered the United States Marine Corps where he served for many years as a sergeant until he retired.
James was baptized at an early age and attended Russell Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Somerville, TN. While serving in the military he met Nina Jones Thomas. They were married November 22, 1972. In 1979, James (along with his family) joined The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia.
James Winfrey leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife Mrs. Nina Winfrey; two sons: John H. Thomas Jr., and Dr. James E.G. (Elana) Winfrey, Jr.; one daughter: Wandalon (Sherman) Ezzard; nine grandchildren: Brandon Laidler, Bryan Ezzard, Sean Ezzard, Amber Thomas, Brent Thomas, Gabriel Winfrey, Jamison Winfrey, Evan Terry and Daye Terry; brothers and sisters: Jessie (Margaret Jean), Winfrey, Jr., David (Annie Ruth) Winfrey, Dorothy (Rodney) Harrison, Augustus Winfrey, Wardine (Larry) Couch, T. J. Winfrey, Carolyn (William) Anthony, Gwendolyn (Junell) Dunlap , Janice (Edmon) Thomas, Benjamin Winfrey, Kenneth (Linda) Winfrey; and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Willford Winfrey and Keith Winfrey.
