Dr. Peyton Williams, Jr. was born April 10, 1942 in Cochran, Georgia to Reverend Peyton Willia~s and Georgia Reddick Williams. During his childhood, Peyton was a member of Marthann B_aptl_st Church in Cochran, where he served as a pianist for the youth choir. He was also very acttve 1n Sunday school and the Baptist Training Union.
Peyton attended high school in Cochran and graduated valedictorian in 1960. He earned his B.S. degree from Fort Valley State University in 1964, his M. Ed. degree from Tuskegee Institute in 1968, his Ed. S degree from the University of Georgia in 1976 and his Ph. D. from Georgia State University in 1982. He served as an adjunct college Professor at Georgia State and Central Michigan University. He has authored several publications including a 2001 monograph entitled ''What It Means to be a Professional Educator." Peyton attributes his love for education to his father, whom he regarded as his hero and role model, and his first grade teacher, Ms. Daisy P. Jones.
Peyton had a distinguished career in education and received national and state recognition for his endeavors. He began his educational career as a high school teacher, assistant high school principal, elementary school principal and middle school principal in Sylvania, Georgia. From his humblt: beginnings in Cochran, Peyton became the first African American to serve as Assistant State Superintendent of Schools and Deputy State Superintendent of Schools for the State of Georgia. He was appointed by Governor Zell Miller as co-facilitator of the Georgia P-16 Initiative, a statewide effort to raise expectations and ensure student success.
Peyton was inducted into the Fort Valley State University Alumni Hall of Fame, where his portrait hangs in the Hunt Memorial Library. He received the Governor's Award for Outstanding Service in State Government from Governor Joe Frank Harris; was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for contributions to education from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; was awarded the Loadstar Award from the Elementary and Middle School Commission of the Association, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Education of Georgia State University.
He was Chairman of the Deacon Ministry at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, a Prince Hall 32 Mason and member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He also served as the Grand Grammateus/Executive Secretary of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity of the Grand Boule. In 2001, he was elected National President of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD).
Dr. Peyton Williams, Jr. departed this life on Sunday, November 20, 2011. He is survived by his wife of forty-two years and best friend, Sandra; two lovely daughters, Rachelle and Tara; sister, Gwendolyn (Tommy) McMullins; brother, Clarence (Clara) Williams; nephews, Reginald Burns, Tommy L. McMullins, Tyrone McMullins, Timothy McMullins, and Bryan Williams; nieces, Cheryl Goodman, Georgiann Burns, Julie (Gregory) Gauss, and Jennifer Williams; a beloved cousin, Hazel Nesbitt; and many other cousins, great nieces, and nephews.
