The Scent ofRoses -Thomas Moore
Let Fate do her worst~ there are relics ofjoy~ Bright dreams ofthe past, which she cannot destroy~
Which come in the night-time ofsorrow and care; And bring back the features that joy used to wear. Long~ long be my heart with such memories filled~ Like the vase in which roses have once been distilledYou may break~ you may shatter the vase ifyou will~ But the scent ofthe roses will hang round it still.

Lucy Whatley was the fifth of six children of Plemon Leon Whatley, Sr. and Mattie Jo Settles Whatley of Milner, Lamar County, Georgia. Quiet and unassuming, Lucy had an effervescent personality that easily won over family and friends . She was a pioneer for her times; daring to venture into avenues that were atypical for women and African Americans. But her family also defied stereotypes. Her father was a skilled master carpenter and building contractor while her mother was a Spelman Seminary educated schoolteacher. Lucy was determined to make her own mark on life through high academic and professional achievement. She accomplished her mission.
Lucy's secondary education began at Midway Elementary School in Lamar County and ended with graduation from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta. Her next stop was Spelman College, but it did not have the academic program and athletics that Lucy craved . Leaving her mother's alma mater behind, Lucy transferred to Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, Georgia where she starred as a top shooter on the women 's basketball team. In a short while, she decided that Tuskegee Institute (Alabama) was more to her liking so she left "The Valley" to play women's basketball and earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Institutional Management from Tuskegee in 1946. Upon graduation, Lucy crisscrossed the country for additional study and work experience in institutional management. She studied hospital food services management at Beth Israel Hospital School of Dietetics in Boston, Massachusetts before managing food services at the Red Cross Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky for two years.
Her next stop was the prestigious Columbia University in New York City for a Master of Arts degree in Institutional Management in 1948. Lucy was a highly educated and top-flight qualified dietitian after nine intensive years following high school graduation.
Putting her native South on hold, Lucy ventured to Washington, DC to begin an internship as a registered dietitian at Freedmen's Hospital. There she earned her certificate as a dietitian in 1951 despite some major health challenges, and easily segued into Bowie State College (Maryland) that same year, first as Food Service Manager then as Food Administrator in charge of all food services at the University. Lucy spent 42 highly productive years at Bowie State University culminating in their naming "The Lucy Whatley Dining Hall" in the then newly constructed Wiseman Center in 1991 in her honor shortly before retirement in 1993.
Prior to retirement, Lucy led a very energetic professional life. She was an active member of the American Dietetic Association, Maryland Dietetic Association, Nutrition Today Society, Dietitians in the National Association of College and University Food Services, The Association of College Unions - International, and the Association of Conference and Events Directors - International. She completed continuing education courses in biochemistry and applied food service sanitation at the U. S. Agriculture Department Graduate School (Washington, DC), National Institute for the Food Service Industry (Chicago, Illinois) and Purdue University (Lafayette, Indiana). This humble woman from Milner, Georgia lived her dream as a professional , avid reader, world traveler and enthusiastic sports fan. And even with this very busy schedule, Lucy's devotion to family never wavered. She was a strong supporter of Whatley family reunions and an engaging family storyteller.
Lucy loved family and enjoyed a tremendous camaraderie with her siblings. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Grace Amanda Whatley Hinds. They maintained a very close relationship throughout their lives. Four brothers preceded Lucy in death -Piemon Leon Whatley, Jr., Warren Settles Whatley, Sr. , Charles Raven Whatley, Sr. , and Henry Lincoln Whatley. Other survivors include brother-in-law, Thomas Hinds and sister-in-law, Virginia T. Whatley. Lucy was an integral part of the Whatley-Mann family legacy and has ten surviving nieces and nephews, Beverly Whatley McDonald, JoAnn Whatley, Patricia Whatley Showell, Warren S. Whatley, Jr., Sylvia Hinds Reid, Lynn H. Whatley, Sr., Paula Whatley Matabane, Vera Hinds Plummer, Plemon T. El-Amin , and Charles R. Whatley, Jr.; and their children, and several cousins, all of whom loved Aunt Lucy dearly.
Additionally, Aunt Lucy's primary caregiver in her last years was Ethelyn Lester, and her great-nephew, Jamin D. Whatley, also greatly assisted in her household-care.
Lucy was a tremendously loving, easy-going humanitarian whose presence shall be missed. She gave devoted service to many, including in her latter years extraordinary support to her brother, Warren and his wife, Frances through extended itlness . Lucy maintained her Atlanta home with her mother throughout the years and brought great joy to her Atlanta family after her retirement.
