Deacon Emeritus Harrison Henry Whatley was born September 26, 1924 in
Milner, Lamar County, Georgia to the late Lillian Ison Whatley and Albert Leon Whatley, Sr. He attended Central Elementary School, a school that was built on one acre of land, deeded from his granddaddy so his children could get an education. Harrison attended High School in Spalding County (Griffin, Georgia) and attended Hampton Institute (Virginia), Chicago School of Decoration and Morehouse College.
On December 21, 1985, he was united in marriage to Vera J. Sims.
Being the son of a contractor, he learned the skills of the trade. After moving to Atlanta, Georgia, he worked at Whatley Construction Company in charge of Upholstering and Interiors. He also worked at the Pullman Shop in upholstering, interior and finishing departments. After leaving the Pullman Shop, he opened Whatley's Interiors, Inc., and VOWH Enterprises, Inc.
Harrison joined Central Baptist Church, Milner, Georgia, at the age of 10. While in college, he joined and attended the Church of Christ, Hampton, Va. After returning to Atlanta he united with Union Baptist Church and served for 27 years as director of the Church School and the Scouting Program where he received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award a volunteer in scouting can receive. (pictured on back) He was ordained a Deacon in March 1958 and has served as a Deacon for 59 years. In 1991 he joined Christian Fellowship Baptist Church where he served for 25 years and became a Deacon Emeritus. He served 9 years as the first Chair of Deacons and has served on many other church committees. He attended several Baptist Congress and Conventions' religious education and leadership classes. Harrison gave his all!
Harrison is survived by his wife, Vera Sims Whatley; sister Maurice W. Haynes, cousin Walter Dallas; sisters-in-law, Shirley S. Sumlin, Willie Mae Whatley, brothers -in-law, Roger (Sarah) Sims, Eddie Sims, Larry Sims; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Special Friend of the family, Monica Madhosingh.
