On August 2, 1957, Reverend Charles Edward Wells, Junior was born to his proud parents, the late Rev. Dr. Charles Edward Wells, Sr. and Mrs. Barbara Jean Hambry Wells in Wheeling, West Virginia. Chucky, as he was affectionately known, was described by his mother as "the Miracle Baby", because of his small size as a prematurely born baby. The miracle baby had developed into an earthly angel but on Friday, November 16, 2007, God decided that He needed Chucky to become one of His "Heavenly Angels" and thus, Chucky was called from labor to reward. Like his father, who was a renown minister in the A.M.E. Church, Chucky had the privilege of growing up in a very religious environment and as a result, he chose at the early age of fifteen to answer "the call" to preach. He preached his first sermon in 1972 at Mount Zion A.M.E. Church in Waycross, Georgia.
Chucky was academically talented. His elementary school education was acquired in Macon, Georgia and his High School diploma was earned with honors from Boggs Academy in Keysville, Georgia. Upon graduation, Rev. Wells was awarded a full four year scholarship to Iowa State University. However, he attended and graduated from Morris Brown College where he received the Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management. He had begun making plans to attend Turner Seminary.
In December of 1983, he married Celeste Ann Adams Wells. During their marriage she stood by his side not only as a first lady but as a partner in his ministry as well. During the time of his heart transplant she stood faithfully by his side.
Rev. Wells served many congregations throughout the state of Georgia. In fact, he served as senior pastor for thirteen (13) A.M.E. Churches with his last significant appointment being at Pleasant Hill A.M.E. Church in College Park, GA. At the time of his passing, he was serving as Assistant Pastor to Rev. C. 0. Adams, Jr. at Christ Community A.M.E. Church in Clarkston, Georgia where he was deeply loved and appreciated.
In additional to his ministerial work, Chucky was an excellent educator. As a paraprofessional, he was outstanding. So much so, that he was named paraprofessional of the year in both the Richmond County and Atlanta Public School Systems. He loved working with young children. During his growth and development stages as a youth, he served as president of the local YPD and was very active at the district, conference and Sixth Episcopal District levels. Even during his various periods of illness, he never chose to miss working with and serving the students and teachers to whom he was assigned. His final position was at South Atlanta High School.
Rev. Wells is survived by his faithful wife of almost twenty-four years, Rev. Celeste A. Wells of Atlanta; a loving mother, Mrs. Barbara H. Wells, Atlanta; Grandmother, Mrs. Maxie W. Hambry, Austell , Ga. ; BrotherIn-Law, Rev. C. 0. Adams, Jr. (Tinnie) Dunwoddy; Sister-In-Laws, Carolyn Adams, Fairburn and Ms. Clover Adams, Decatur; Aunts: Christine W. Hudson of Tucson, Arizona and Jimmye H . Jolley of Atlanta; Uncle: Dr. Samuel D. Jolley, Jr. , Atlanta; devoted cousins and many other relatives and friends.
Reverend Augusta H. Hall, Jr., Presiding
