Tlie Journey
Dr. Wells was born March 19, 1938 to his proud parents, the late Mr. Willie and Mrs. Anita Russ Wells in Washington, Pennsylvania. His growth and development environment was extremeiYr religious in that his father was a minister in the Church of God in Christ. It is therefore, no surprise that the call to preach came to him at the early age of twelve even though he did not accept the call until years later on July 31,
1962 at the St. Paul A. M. E. Church in Macon, Georgia.
In high school Charles or CE or even Charlie as he was sometimes called, was an outstanding athlete in the sports of track and basketball. When he was not participating in sports, he was a percussionist in the band or was developing his melodious tenor voice.
Dr. Wells recognized at an early age that education was an important and essential characteristic for a successful life. Thus, he earned the Bachelor's degree from West Virginia State College in Psychology, the Master of Divinity degree in counseling and parish ministry from Turner Seminary of the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta and the Doctor of Ministry degree from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur. He was awarded honorary Doctorate degrees from Union Baptist Seminary and Mississippi Southern College.
At the time of his passing, Dr. Wells was the Senior Pastor of Flipper Temple A. M. E. Church of Atlanta. His vision was to totally renovate the church which is nearly complete. A youth tutorial program and the Gideonites Outreach Ministry are among the several innovative programs at the church. Prior to Flipper Temple A. M. E. Church of Atlanta, he served in several pastorships throughout Georgia, beginning in 1962 at Camp Hope A. M. E. Church where he served for three years. During that time the church experienced growth, particularly among the youth and the church was completely renovated. In 1965 he was assigned pastoral charge of St. Paul A. M. E. Church in Macon. Here, he was responsible for establishing one of the most impressive church plans of his time, which included a gymnasium, daycare, educational and social orientated facilities.
From 1967 to 1974, The Reverend Wells served as pastor of Mt. Zion A. M. E. Church in Waycross where the congregation was instrumental in eliminating the city's dual school system, among other movements such as a selective buying campaign. At Bethel A. M. E. Church in Augusta, The Reverend
Wells operated a special marriage counseling clinic, and later moved on to Savannah's St. Philip Monumental
A.M. E. Church, the oldest A.M. E. Church in Georgia. Other pastoral appointments include service at St. Mark A. M. E. Church of Atlanta, St. Mark A. M. E. Church of Columbus, Bethel A. M. E. Church of Albany, and Allen Temple A. M. E. Church of Atlanta.
In addition, Dr. Wells served in the U. S. Army as a first lieutenant company commander. He also worked as a social worker in Cleveland, Ohio, an assistant director of program operations for the Community Action Agency of Jacksonville, Florida, a job counselor for CETA Program in Savannah and a technical assistant specialist for the CETA Program in Atlanta.
The Reverend Wells received the Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Award in 1969, the Certificate Merit in 1971 for distinguished service in civil rights, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Turner Theological Seminary in 1986, the A. C. Cain Award for pastoral excellence in 1986 and the keys to the City of Albany in 1981. He also was listed in the 1970 and 1971 editions of Personalities of the South, a biography of notable leaders, had a day named in his honor by the mayor of Augusta for contributions to the City and State in 1976, and was chaplain of the day for the Georgia State Senate in 1980 and 1982.
Membership and affiliations for the Reverend Wells include the General Board of the A. M. E. Church, the Connectional Council of the A. M. E. Church, the National Alumni Association and executive board of Turner Seminary, delegate to the General Conference of the A. M. E. Church since 1972, past president of the Southern Christian Leadership Council (SCLC) and NAACP Atlanta Chapters, Operation Push, the Community Organizers Association, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons,
the A. M. E. Ministers Union, the Christian Council of Metro Atlanta, the Martin L. King, Jr. Center for
Social Change, and past president of the Dougherty Ministerial Fellowship. He has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, West Indies, South America, and Africa.
Dr. Wells served as a Commissioner on the Fulton County Development Authority and as a Commissioner of the Atlanta Housing Authority.

Tri6ute In Poetry
I've done a lot ofplanning And I've worked on schemes galore
I've had the urge to nobler deeds Than I have done before
'
Contentment never dwells within
No peace of mind I claim
I just want to build for those I love
And leave behind a name
t
I've done a lot of dreaming And I've dreamed of days to be I've known the joys of girdons won
When fortune smiled on me
But win or lose by chance of fate I must stay in the game
I want to build for those I love And leave behind a name
I want to face the storms of life And find in them a plan
To help me onward with my load And make me more a man
I crave no bed of luxury No crown of bauble fame I just want to work for those I love And leave behind a name
Then when the final trump sounds for me I'd like to slip away
And sit beside the water's edge And wait the coming day
Where friends I've known awhile and lost Meet in mild acclaim
I'd like to know I've paid my dues And left behind a name
