Soror Gloria "GiGi" Braynon Watson
Gloria "GiGi" Braynon Watson was born June 12, 1935 to Edward and MayDell Braynon in M iami Florida and left this earth October 26, 2009 to add color to heaven. Her life was the very essence of love. Her wit and subtle spirit, her kindness, her gentle manner, were hallmarks of her personality. She was indeed a remarkable woman and will be remembered for her smile her quiet strength and incredible sense of humor. She was described by the media as the lady with the dead-pan humor that always seemed to brighten any moment and motivate her readers. How blessed we are to have known such a person.
GiGi was a teacher, journalist, linguist, motivational speaker and an author. She attended Booker T. Washington High School in Miami, Florida . She advanced her education at Talladega College, Georgetown University, Florida A&M University, and La Sorbonne in Paris, France. She studied Latin, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Italian, and Creole. She served as a volunteer interpreter for the Council of International visitors to Miami, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia and was an official interpreter for the Miss Universe Pageant for eleven years. She w as raised in St Pau l AME church in Miami where she served as a Sunday school teacher and was the first president of the Cathedral Choir. She was a devoted 50 year member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a proud member of the NAACP and National Media Women . In 1973, with her brother Harold, she spearheaded the first Braynon Jackson family reunion . The Braynon family was honored to be chosen as the Urban League family of the year and was awarded the trophy by then Vice President Hubert Humphrey.
She leaves to remember her a devoted husband Earl Gene Watson; a son Kytiwa Watson; a grandson Kytiwa Watson, Jr.; beloved brothers, Dr Edward Braynon, Jr. (Miami, FL) and Judge Harold L. Braynon (Miami, FL); "the greatest sister in the world", Eleanor Braynon Brassfield (Miami, FL); many aunts, nieces and cousins; her beloved sisters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; godchildren; devoted readers; a host of friends; and all the children that she touched while teaching in Atlanta and Miami. She was preceded in death by her daughter Miaquelle Watson .
Each time I pass a church I always pay a visit. So when at last I'm carried in, the Lord won't say: "WHO IS IT?"
