Lou Walker, husband, father, grandfather, actor, community activist, business owner and DeKalb County Commissioner, departed this life on Monday, August 2, 2004 after a brief hospitalization following an auto accident.
Born in Bessemer, Alabama on February 20, 1938; his parents, Walter and Ruby Davis preceded him in death. After graduating from Dunbar High School in Bessemer, he moved to Chicago (Illinois) served as a Chicago police officer and undercover vice detective for ten years; served as president of the Southwest Community Action Coalition; and began his acting career.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa Sheridan Tucker Walker; son, Oranz Walker, Lithonia, Georgia; Louis Walker, Jr. (Cynthia), Dolton, Illinois; daughter, Angelique Wood, Chicago, Illinois; son, Reginald Tucker (Brigette), Scottdale, Georgia; and five grandchildren: Oranz Walker, Jr., Milton Coleman, Jr., LaShon Walker, Angela Wood, and Shaundra Wood. Surviving brothers and sisters: Elbert Hill (Dee), Bessemer, Alabama; Velma Caine, Birmingham, Alabama; Rita Davis, Dolomite, Alabama; and Walter Jean Williams (Jerry), Bessemer, Alabama; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A s a business owner, he was co-owner, with his wife Theresa, of Paragon Productions, a public relations/advertising firm and also the Blues in the
Alley nightclub in Underground Atlanta. Lou Walker as an advocate and champion for minority-owned business participation in public and private contracts founded the Georgia Black Chamber of Commerce where he served as President and Chairman of the Board.
H e has appeared in over 65 feature films and made-for-television movies some of which include, "Mississippi Burning", "My Cousin Vinny", "The Firm", and "Remember the Titans". His televi-
sion credits include, "In the Heat of the Night", TNT's "Cold Sassy Tree" and "Freedom Song", just to name a few. His involvement in the film industry was not limited to acting; he was appointed to serve on the Georgia Film and Tape Office in 1983 by Governor Joe Frank Harris and was reappointed in 1991 by former Governor Zell Miller. He also served as vice president of the Screen Actors Guild where he chaired the Hospitality and Public Relations committees.
Community Activist Lou Walker worked diligently for over twenty-years to bring a much needed hospital to the south DeKalb area. Through his efforts, the DeKalb Medical Center will be opening a 100-bed hospital at their Hillandale campus in 2005.
In August 2000 he was elected to represent the DeKalb County Super District 7, in a spe-
cial election and was re-elected to full fouryear term in 2002. During his tenure as Commissioner, he worked to secure passage of the $125,000,000 Park Bond Referendum; proposed the DeKalb County Bureau of Cultural affairs; spearheaded the passage of the Moratorium that allowed for the updating of the county's building Codes, departmental re-organization and subdivision code; and proposed the County's Bury Pit Ordinance that made it illegal for builder/developers to bury construction debris on the site of home developments. As Chairperson for the DeKalb Economic Development/Planning Commission, he actively participated in the development of new initiatives for the expansion, development and retention for business in DeKalb. His mission was to provide open government, accessible government --- a government for 'we the people'.
Just Be Grateful
When things are not working right for you Don't scramble, fret, complain and stew. Stop and think how blessed you are. There are those who are more wretched by far. Just be grateful.
For little things you take for granted each day, Like the weather, when fair, And the courage to dare; To try again when all seems lost, And rise once more at any cost. For this be grateful.
For home and family who are dear, Though some are away they seem so near. For pain that helps us understand The suffering of other lands. This too be grateful.
To see, to hear, to walk, to talk, To love and be loved, for friend and foe, For even our woe; For work for play, For each hour of the day, For these, let us be grateful.
For the will to live when hope is gone And all around there seems a storm, And darkness seems as black as night, For faith that lets us see the light. For this I am grateful.
Then when we have finished what we were placed here to do
And the final call has come for you, Don't pity yourself with tears of regret, There's another life waiting for you yet. For this be very grateful.
