Her Favorite Poem and Life Motto
A Psalm of Life by
Henry W. Lo,ngfellow
Tell me not, in mournful numbers, Dife is but an empty dream! For fh(J soul i.s dead that slumbers And thing.c; are not what they seem.
Life is real! L ife is earnest! And the gral'e is not it.c; goal! Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Wa s not .c;poken of the .c;oul.
Art is long, and Time isjl.eeting, And ou1 heartH, though l'llout a,nd bra/Je Still, like nwfjl.ed drums, are beating Funeral marches to the g'rave.
In the uorld's broad field of battle In the bivonac of L ife Be not like dutnb, dril'en cattle! Be a hero in the strife!
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow Is owr destined end or way But to act. that each to-morrow Find us farther than today.
Lives of great men all around u.s We can make our lives sublime, And, depa'rting, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time.
Trust no Future, howe 'er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! A ct, act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o'erhead!
Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o'er life's solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate, Still achieving, still pursuing Learn to labor and to wait.
