Obituary
Christopher Franklin Vaughns, M.D., affectionately known as daddy, uncle Chris, Christopher, Dr. Vaughns or simply Dr. Chris, was born on November 10, 1946 to the late John Claude and Margaret Franklin Vaughns in Chicago, fllinois. On Wednesday, December 29, 2004, Christopher answered the eternal call with his family and clergy at his side.
He attended the Chicago Public School System, graduating from Tilden Technical in January 1964. He graduated from the University of fllinois with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. He also worked as an agent of the fllinois Bureau of Investigation. Upon the encouragement of fellow pharmacists, he applied and was accepted to the Creighton University School of Medicine. He received his M.D. degree in May of 1979. After working in Rochester, MN and Rockford, fllinois, he decided to move to Atlanta, Georgia. He initially worked in the Crawford Long Hospital emergency room while opening his private practice. He continued his private practice with love and compassion by treating every patient as if he or she were brother, sister, mother or father until his sudden illness in August of this year. He promised God that if He allowed him to get into medical school that he would take care ofpatients until he died.
Always concerned about social problems, he continued to do his hand-tohand ministry in many ways - from giving money for starving people in Africa to giving to the homeless men at the Linden Avenue Post Office. He even went to the level of admitting a homeless man to the hospital - not only to treat him but also to allow the nurses and social workers of Crawford Long Hospital to locate his family in Augusta, Georgia.
Christopher was in many organizations: The American Medical Association, the American College of Physician, the Doctors' Mayo Society, the Mayo Alumni Association, the Georgia State Boxing Commission (1990-1994), Venue Medical Director for Boxing for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, the NAACP-lifetime member, Team Holyfield (1994-2004).
His patients were his family. He encouraged many young people to always strive for high goals. Those he mentored graduated from colleges and universities all over the nation from Valdosta State College to Harvard University. He coached many little league games for his sons. He traveled to Beijing and Shanghai, China and London, England with his sons' school bands. He also had a deep passion for fishing, hunting and almost any outdoors activity.
Christopher shared his great talents with a loving family. He leaves to remember his inspiration a loving wife, Beryl; his children, Dr. Estelle (Dale), Christopher II and John Charles; grandchildren, Olivia Zoe and Baby Girl Williams; Sisters, Claudine Phillips, Juliet Vaughns and Eileen Wells (Bob); Uncles, Dr. Carl Franklin (Dr. May Ann), Cleveland Garrett and Maurice Vaughns (Cleta); Aunts, Merque Polk, Eloise Hurst, Doris Sampson, Lillie Mae Vaughns and Madeline Franklin; mother-in-law, Norma Turner Harris Great; brothers-in-law, Charles Harris, Keith Harris (Diane), Eric Harris and Shawn Harris (Karla).
Left to cherish many happy memories are a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and generations offriends. Christopher leaves a rich heritage offamily and friends to remember him by. Special family, Joy Lazarus (Orlando}, Margaret Reszutek (Gregory) and Kimberly Gilley - Thank you.

PEOPLE:
We are here because we are grateful for Christopher, who was so dear and beloved to us. We are grateful that through his life and suffering, he became a person we all could love. It is our prayer that all Christopher held dear will be remembered and honored by those who come after him. We know that his special gifts and joys shared in life will continue to be valued by us. It is our prayer that nothing of Christopher's life and work will be lost, but that his spirit will remain in our hearts and give strength to us in our times of need. We are grateful to God, that the life-giving spirit and presence of Christopher will go on living in our hearts, in our minds, and in our lives.
