Rev. Danny Thomas Sr. was born to the late Sarah Jo Dukes Thomas on June 29, 1968 in Vera Beach, Florida and is the youngest of five children. His faith and love for God were culimated from an early age, preaching his first sermon at the age of 9. As a teenager, he traveled this country as a member of the Fort Lauderdale chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America under the tutelage of James Cleveland and was a faithful member of the Florida Mass Choir. Heavily influenced by his mentor and pastor, the late Dr. Mack King Carter of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Danny studied theology at Florida Memorial College and later at lnterdominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
Danny was blessed with a loving family. He married his first wife, Kimberly Renee Young, in November 1987 in Tallahassee, Florida. The union produced his eldest child, D. Danyelle Thomas, on June 1, 1988. After moving his family to Atlanta, Georgia he would later remarry his second wife, Chevonna Octavia Francis, in September 1994. The union would produce his only son and namesake, Danny Thomas Jr., on May 13, 2000. Danny raised both of his children with patience, uncompromising discipline, and with expectations of academic excellence and strong moral character. He dedicated his children to God and encouraged them to come into relationship with Christ, an example of faith that burns within his children to this day.
Reverend Thomas was a guest in many pulpits but devoted his membership to New Beginning Full Gospel Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia, under the leadership of Bishop James H. Morton, where he was a member until his death. He was known not only for his preaching, but also for his music ministry through song. A devoted fan to the "old time way," he was often called to raise hymns and traditional songs of praise as sermonic selections. He was also active with the Georgia Mass Choir where his distinctive voice can be heard on classic songs such as "Joy" and "Sunday Morning". Harkening to his choral roots, Danny founded and served as Executive Director of the Greater Florida Mass Choir in in 2002 until his illness prevented him.
Danny was an example of true servant leadership. His magnetic personality allowed him audience with many of the greatest pastors across this country. A true "friend of the preacher," he always had time to answer a question or solve a problem, no matter how small. He was a bridge connector, connecting his brothers of the faith to congregations near and far. He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is at peace with our creator.
Reverend Thomas was promoted from labor to reward in his heavenly home on January 5, 2016 after a valiant fight against ongoing illness. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.
He is survived by his children, D. Danyelle Thomas and Danny Thomas Jr., his former wives, Chevonna Thomas and Kimberly Bankston; his brothers, Bobby and Peter; his sisters, Fronia and Grindal; his caretaker, David Thorton; his godsisters and godbrothers; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. He is preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann; and his mother, Sarah Jo Dukes Thompson.
