His driving; desire for education and advancement subsequently led him to attend Georg;ia Perimeter Colleg;e, formerly Dekalb Junior Colleg;e. He developed a stron!4 work ethic during; his hig;h school days, helping; to support his family as a waiter. His stories of his g;ood income, dress and other thing;s that went with the good life of a teenager earning; "big; money" are legendary.
His destiny as a Fire Fig;hter and Public Safety Officer was soon sealed when at the urging; of his mother, he applied for a job with the Atlanta Fire Department, where they were reported to be "hiring;." His first two years as a firefighter were somewhat uneventful, but he was soon to be off to serve his country in the U. S. Army. True to his calling;, he completed his two years of service in 1971, having; commanded the Crash/ Fire/Rescue Operation of the 19th Aviation Division in South Korea.
The leadership that R. T. was to provide during; his brief military career was exemplary of a lifetime of service and influential involvement. During; a career that spanned over 35 years, R.T. broug;ht his leadership and unique skills to motivate and inspire people to many positions of public trust including;:
Director-Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Ag;ency Fire Chief-Fulton County Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief-City of Atlanta Airport Fire Division Assistant Fire Chief-City of Atlanta Field Operations Division
Throughout his very driven career, R. T. never lost sig;ht of the importance of family, and always maintained a close bond with his sibling;s and other family members. His marriag;e to Jackie in 1993 proved to be the g;lue to hold it all together. Theirs was a marriag;e filled with love, family, friends , food, travel, laughter and a Christian home. R. T. was a dedicated and involved member of St. John A.M.E. Church, Fairburn, Georg;ia, where he served as president of the Men's Fellowship and on the Trustee Board.
