The Obituary
The Reverend Doctor William Chauncey Smith, Sr. was born on October 28, 1910 in Alpharetta, Georgia to the late Oscar Sharon Smith and the late Helen Maranda Martin Smith. In the early 1920s the family moved to Duluth, Gwinnett County, Georgia so that the Smith children could get a better primary education. Reverend Smith was the eldest of nine children. Six ofhis siblings have preceded him death.
He received his education from Georgia Baptist College, formally known as Central City College in Macon, Georgia. He did further study at Morris Brown College.
Reverend Smith was involved in many professional organizations. The list of organizations in which he was involved included, but was not limited to: The Progressive National Baptist Convention, Union Middle River Baptist Association, New Era State Convention, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Atlanta Missionary Baptist Association, Clayton County Ministerial Alliance, Executive Committee of the Morehouse School of Religion, and Atlanta Baptist Minister' s Union.
In May of 2004, Reverend Smith received the Sacred Degree of Doctor of Divinity from the Baptist International Bible Institute. He is listed in the Oxford Book of Who's Who. On Christmas Day 1997, a star was named Reverend William Chauncey Smith, Sr. The star named in his honor is located in the Aquila (Eagle) Constellation in the Milky Way Galaxy. His name is immortalized in the firmament. This star information is included in the International Star Registry, which is held in a vault in Switzerland and sanctioned by the United States Copyright Office.
Reverend Smith was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church in Norcross, Georgia where he was pastor in the late thirties through the mid-fifties. During the sixty-five years that he was pastor, he had pastorates in Georgia in the following cities Austell, Norcross, Athens, Monroe, Dahlonega and Jonesboro. He was Pastor Emeritus for both Shiloh Baptist Church and Fortson Memorial Baptist Church.
A world traveler, Reverend Smith spoke in many pulpits around the world including: Rome, Italy; Tokyo, Japan; and Zaire, Africa. He did an extensive tour of the Holy Land in the late sixties. He referred to his travels as inspirational and educational.
Reverend Smith was married to the late Viola Williams Smith for fortynine years and six months. To that union were born four children: E. Paulette Smith-Epps of Atlanta, Georgia; and Thomas Gerald Smith of Minneapolis, Minnesota; William Chauncey Smith, II (deceased) and Joseph Wayne Smith (deceased). In addition, he had one son-in-law, William Given Epps, Sr.; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Reverend Smith was married to the former Mary 0. Fryer of Augusta, Georgia since 1994. This union expanded Reverend Smith's immediate family. There are five additional children who are: Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Fryer, Sr. (LeSherma); Mrs. Edith Larke; Mr. and Mrs. Horace Lamback (Gwendolyn); Mr. Herman D. Fryer and Mrs. Norma Fryer Cato. There are seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Additional survivors include: a sister, Helen Elizabeth Smith; a brother, Oscar Rubin Smith (Essie Mae); a foster daughter, Marva Swanson (Joe) and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
During the last three years of his life, Reverend Smith resided at NurseCare of Buckhead (a nursing home) where he inspired the staff as he praised the Lord often. He thanked the Lord for everything he was given to him, for every service that was provided and for everyone of his caregivers. He insisted on saying the grace for the whole eating area before each meal. On Wednesday morning, January 13, 2010, Reverend Smith fell asleep in the arms of Jesus.
Reverend Smith lived an abundant Christian life. He touched many, many lives and all are better for having the honor of having known him. He brought warmth and joy wherever he went. Therefore, we must celebrate this blessing from God in the person that was Reverend Doctor William Chauncey Smith, Sr.

Blessings come to us in many ways, through prayer, faith, friendship and love, through sharing both sorrow and gladness. Thank you to all of you who offered love, help and moral support to us and to Reverend Smith, especially when his health began to fail. A special thanks is extended to Reverend White and the Shiloh Baptist Church Family. Over the past ten years since Reverend Smith retired, you have been faithful to him and you honored him beyond measure as your Pastor Emeritus.
Nurse Care of Buckhead, we thank you for providing loving and tender care for Reverend Smith when he needed it most. Your love and concern for him will never be forgotten.
Your gifts of love during our bereavement were and still are a source of comfort and encouragement. It has helped us sustain the loss of a husband and father.
