Richard Smith was born on June 8, 1936 to the late Willie and Lucille Smith. He was an only child, born and raised in Augusta, Georgia. He came up in the Catholic Church and received his education from Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Augusta.
On April 21, 1978, Richard married the former Joyce Pittman. This union celebrated 32 years of marriage. Richard was also the proud father of his only son, Richard, Jr.
Richard worked in the hotel restaurant business for over 20 years as an Executive Steward and later Director of Purchasing. He enjoyed opening new hotel restaurants and worked at various establishments throughout the metro Atlanta area. Some of these included the Ramada Renaissance Hotel, The Westin Lenox Hotel, the Omni International Hotel and The Mansion.
Richard joined the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in 1992, where his wife Joyce was already a member. He loved to attend service and worshipped faithfully.
Richard was a 33rd Degree Freemason. He enjoyed t he brotherhood and serving as an active member of the Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge #002, A.F. & A.M., A.A.S.R. of Atlanta, Georgia where he was a Lodge Elder.
On Saturday, June 11, 2011, just three days after his 75th birthday, Richard transitioned from this mortal life to his eternal life. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Joyce Smith; one son, Richard (Mae) Smith, Jr.; two granddaughters, Rachel (JT) Moss and Evita Butler; one great-grand daughter, Saniya; six sisters-in-law, Jerrie Jones, Betty Broughton, Joyce Ann (Robert) Ringfield, Richie McDowell, Darlene Leslie and Charlene (Clyde) Wiley; one brother-in-law, Richard (Debra) Pittman, Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
