Mrs. Mary Lee Ammons Smith was born on May 30, 1933 to the late Rister Ammons and Sarah Shephard Ammons at 1093 West Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia. She departed this life on Tuesday, October 5 , 2010 after several months offailing health. Mary Lee, which she always asked to be called because her father named her, was preceded in death by her parents;four brothers; two sisters; and two sons, Hebert Nathaniel Anzmons and Marion Smith.
Mary Lee joined Fortess Avenue Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of the late Rev. TL. White ofAtlanta, Georgia. After marriage and moving to Jonesboro, she moved her membership to Shiloh Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir for may years holding the office of secretary for some time. She loved singing and could be found often singing and playing the piano she purchased for her home.
Mary Lee was educated in the Atlanta Public School System attending Crogman Elementary School, David T. Howard Junior High School, and Booker T. Washington High School. She later furthered her education by attending night school classes at J.W. Arnold in Jonesboro. Making a career in the cleaning business, Mary Lee workedfor many years for Forest Park Laundry and Cleaners. She also worked for Pat's Laundry and Dry Cleaners before retiring in 1995.
In 1949, Mary Lee'sfamily moved to Forest Park, Georgia, where she met and married Joseph Smith and on June 7, 2010, they celebratedfifty-eight years together. From this union, nine children were born. To meet her was to love her and there are many, many who called her mama just as her children did to prove that. Whether she was called Mary, Mary Lee, mama, grandma, Mrs. Mary, Mrs. Smith, Aunt Mary, or Cousin Mary, she had a long lasting impact on all that she knew and met.
Mary Lee leaves to cherish precious memories the love of her life and husband, Joseph Smith; Children, Mr. Frederick (Pennie) Smith , Ms. Marie Smith, Mr. Reginald (Beatrice) Smith, Ms. Fedelia Smith, Mr. Ahlo Smith, Ms. LaTorsha Smith, Mrs. Neeka (Rodney) Reid, and Mr. Erroll Smith; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; five step grandchildren; one sister, Bessie M.
