Grace Lena Ann Burley was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on December 26, 1917 to Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Price Burley. As a teenager, she and her brother, the late Frederick Price Burley, were energetic participants in youth activities at the First Baptist Church. Grace was one of the Sunday School pianists at the church. This early connection between her love of music and the church was evident throughout her life.
Grace majored in music at Hampton Institute graduating in 1938 with highest honors. For graduate work she attended Columbia University, earning a Masters degree in 1941 and, with the assistance of a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, completed her doctorate in 1955. Her teaching experiences were rich and varied. As a music educator, Dr. Smith taught in both public schools and colleges. Her career began in the public schools of Statesville, North Carolina. For over forty years, Dr. Smith served as a professor of music at Fort Valley State University, Morris Brown College, and until her retirement in 1983, at Spelman College. While at Spelman, she .served in many capacities including professor of music, Music Department Chair, and Acting Academic Dean.
While on the faculty at Morris Brown College, she met and married Herbert C. Boggs, Chairperson of the Mathematics Department. To this union one daughter, Olivia, was born. Professor Boggs died in 1949. In 1962, Grace married a Spelman College colleague, Dr. Barnett F. Smith who died in 1983.
Grace was the recipient of numerous academic and civic awards. Among them was the first "Teacher of the Year" award from Spelman College and the Ruth Hall Hodges award from Morris Brown College. Additionally, she was honored by the National Association of Negro Musicians for outstanding contributions to music.
At Friendship Baptist Church, Grace continued her music ministry as director of the Senior Choir for fourteen years and founding Director of the Retirees Choir for eleven years. Grace, who was affectionately known as "The Maestro" blessed the church with her renditions of traditional Negro spirituals in a style reminiscent of the Hampton Institute Singers. In addition to her music ministry, Grace served faithfully as a Deaconess and was honored by the church on many occasions.
Grace was a member of many civic and social organizations, including the MoSo-Lit Circle, the Inquirers Literary Club, the Utopian Literary Club, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and the Links. Her academic affiliations included the Mortar Board Honor Society, Sigma Alpha Iota Society, and Pi Lambda Theta Honor Society.
Grace Boggs Smith was known to all for her gentle, cooperative spirit, vibrant personality, quick wit, beauty, elegance, and Christian dedication. She loved her church, family, friends, and the pastor. She departed this life on Friday, March 26, 1999.
