Viola was born May 8, 1924 in Atlanta, Georgia to Annie Mae Braswell and Adolphus Holbrook. She was the only girl and had two brothers. She grew up on Jackson Street ncar Historic Auburn Avenue where she knew Martin Luther King, Jr. and family and attended Ebenezer Baptist Church.
fn the 1940's, Viola migrated north, first to Hartford, Co~ccticut ~md then to Providence, Rhode Island where she attended Allen AME Church of Prov-idence. She married Earl Skipworth and raised five children as a homemaker and I;:Ite_.r. as a Home Health Aide. She was active in the school PTA and became a pillar in the nc1ghb~rhood known for her strong involvement in the upbringing of her chi ldrcn an~-othcr~ iq her community. She later became an active member of St. Martin DePaul's Senio~ Center.in Providence. Viola was preceded in death by her husband Earl Skipworth Sr. , her daughter Gerald Smith , son Richard Smith , and son Earl Skipworth, Jr. She is survived by her daughters Robin Skipworth and Viola Santos.
Sh e leaves behind seven grandchildren Harold (Yvonne) Smith, Bobby Smith , Alan (Dc'Andrca) Skipworth , Shang Skip worth , Turner Skipworth , Rachel Smith, and Yvonne Santos. She is al so s urvived by seven great-grandchildren , extended family, and friend s. She will be remembered for her wisdom , strength, work ethic and pride in raising her children.
