Reflections on Eleanor 0. Settles Life
Eleanor Olivia Settles, the tenth of eleven children, born of ex-slave parents, Warren and Lucy Ward Settles, came into this world on August 26, 1895. She lived in the Barnesville, Georgia farm community in the house built by her parents, all of her childhood and adult life until1980.
During her early years, she attended the Lucy Cobb private school in Barnesville, completing her high school education at Old Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia. Later, she received her B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Fort Valley State College and her Masters' degree in Elementary Education from Teacher's College, Columbia University, New York City in 1956.
Her teaching career extended over 42 years, her longest term ofservice being spent in the Barnesville-Lamar County School System. She retired from Booker High School after a long and distinguished career.
At age 16, Eleanor became a member of St. Timothy Baptist Church in Barnesville, sharing her talents by faithfully serving as; church secretary, historian, Sunday School teacher, choir director and other capacities. Her sunny disposition, her pleasing personality and her love for people helped her to become a valuable asset to her various communities.
Since 1980 she has resided in Atlanta with relatives where she lived as she died, serene and beautiful. She departed this earthly life on October 29, 1993. She is survived by her nieces and nephews of the: Hinds, Banks, Crawford, Few, Settles and Whatley Families
