Virgil Miguel Scott peacefully made his transition to join his Heavenly Father
on August 18, 2008. An only child, he was pre-deceased by his parents, renowned educators, Anna Pearl Jordan Scott and Virgil M. Scott. "Miguel" as he was affectionately called by family was born in Santiago, Chile on May 2, 1961. He was educated in the Atlanta Public School System and graduated with distinction and honors from Douglass High School in 1979 with 22 academic scholarships including an appointment to West Point Military Academy. Desiring to follow his parents, he matriculated (via scholarship) to Clark College and graduated with honors with a B.A. Degree in Broadcast Management in 1983. While at Clark he again followed in his father's footsteps and joined Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and eventually became a Life Member. He also served as a national officer of Bigger and Better Business. Virgil's graduate studies were completed at the Tuck School ofBusiness at Dartmouth University.
Corporate America beckoned and Virgil joined Baxter Travenol out of college, and in 1990 at the age of 29 joined the Pepsi Cola Company becoming the youngest AfricanAmerican Corporate Vice President in Pepsi's history. Success has its merits and four years later, he joined Miller Brewing Company as a General Manager for the Northeast, and soon moved on as General Manager for the South for Quaker Oats, Gatorade and Snapple brands. He was known as one of the beverage industry's brightest stars. Eager to utilize his expertise from Corporate America, he joined Anderson Communications in 1997 and was promoted to President and COO in 1998. He remained with Anderson Communications until joining the Marquin Group in 2005 where he served with distinction as Vice President ofRecruiting until his demise.
Virgil was a past member of the Board of Visitors of Clark Atlanta University, and a member of the Alumni Association. Tailgating was his fall ritual, and he was ready at each home game to cheer on his beloved Panthers. Virgil used his melodious voice as an on-air personality at WCLK and as a member of Clark's Philharmonic. He was twice the recipient of the Jefferson Cup from the Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia for excellence in business, and he has been the subject of various articles appearing in Black Enterprise, the Baltimore Sun, Advertising Age, and the Atlanta Journal & Constitution.
Adjectives commonly used to describe Virgil were "kind", "patient", "gentleman", "funny", "smart", "brilliant", "affectionate", "caring", and "loving". He loved life and lived it to the fullest. Quite talented, he was a member of the Douglass and Clark Marching Bands as well as the Clark Jazz Ensemble. An avid golfer, most spring weekends would find him with the Links as a member of the Strokers Golf Club. Church memberships included Cascade United Methodist Church and Ariel Bowen United Methodist Church.
Virgil will be missed! He leaves to cherish his memory his Aunt, Narvie Jordan Harris; Uncle and Aunt, Robert and Edna Jordan; Cousins, Daryll Harris Griffin, Mike Griffin and Michael Joseph Griffin; Ina Ward and family; Mary Bell Hammelett and family; Catherine Tigner and family; the Prince Martin families and a host offriends and business associates.
Virgil Miguel Scott - a gentle man and most ofall a gentleman!
