We thank Thee, God, for sun and rain For birds, beasts, flowers, for growing grain.

Mrs. Vashti Elizabeth Calantha Scott, the fourth child of the late Reverend William Alexander Scott and the late Mrs. Nancy Emmeline Scott, was born on April20, 1906 in Edwards, Mississippi.
She received her early education in Edwards and in Johnson City, Tennessee. Mrs. Scott-Ellis graduated from Spelman Seminary in 1925, and attended Tennessee State College in Nashville, Tennessee. While at Spelman, she was awarded the Lincoln Medal in writing and the best essay on President Lincoln.
She taught at Nelson Merry College in Tennessee before traveling to Atlanta to join her mother, brothers, and sisters in publishing the first successful Black daily newspaper, The Atlanta Daily World in 1932. She was a member of the editorial staff and she wrote "Eleanor," the first lovelorn column and "Majoring with Minors" on raising children. In addition, she composed poems and short stories.
Mrs. Scott-Ellis founded the first home in Atlanta to help unwed mothers- The Door of Hope. She was also a PTA President at E.R. 'carter Elementary School. Her hobbies _were collecting dolls and sewing. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church for over fifty years, and formerly served as a Sunday School assistant.
She was married to the late Reverend Dr. C. Nathaniel Ell is and t o t his u n ion, f ive girls were bor n, Angela E. Ell is, Gloria Yvonne Ellis (d. 1945), Mary Elizabeth Odum, Ruth Deborah Ellis (d. 1993),.and Charlotte E. Ellis. Two young sons are also deceased. In addition to her children, she leaves to cherish her memory, one son -in-law, William H. Odum, Sr.; grandchildren, William H. Odum, Ill, Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. Derrik Hinmon (Maria), Slidell, Louisiana, and Deborah Davis, Altanta; brother and sisters, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Scott, Mr. and Mrs. J. Russell Simmons, Sr. (Ruth), and Judge and Mrs. Russell Carter (Esther), Dayton, Ohio.
