THE LIFE AND WORK OF CORNELIUS ADOLPHUS SCOTT
.f
C.A. Scott, a pioneer and trailblazer of the Black press, was a native of Edwards, Mississippi and the fifth of nine children, born on February 8, 1908 to the late William Alexander Scott and Emmeline Southall Scott. He learned early about responsibility, survival and manhood. His mother and older brother, W.A. Scott II, founder of the Atlanta Daily World, relied on his maturity, loyalty and dedication to help build the family business. He took the helm of the Atlanta Daily World (the first successful black daily newspaper in the country) in 1934, upon the untimely murder of his brother, W.A. Scott II. He officially retired from the paper in August, 1997 and became publisher emeritus.
His long history with the paper--over 63 years--earned him many accolades and honors. As the longest serving editor and publisher of a newspaper (black or white) in the history of this country, he truly earned the moniker "Dean of the Black Press." He fought racial bigotry, segregation and injustice throughout his life and was a strong advocate of civil and voting rights. Scott' s passionate editorials against the "o ld" White Democratic Primaries set the basis for a one man, one vote standard throughout the South . Setting up two public defense funds through the paper, he helped the victim ' s families of the Monroe Massacre in 1946 and saved an innocent young black father, accused of raping a white woman, from dying in Georgia' s electric chair in 1960.
A strong advocate of a two-party system, Scott was invited to join the Republican Party in 1952, endorsing Dwight D. Eisenhower for President, and remained an active Republican throughout his life. He was quite proud of his involvement in helping Georgia become a two-party state. His conservative views as a Republican led him to be fiscally and socially responsible, never wavering or compromising on racial issues, equal justice and fair treatment of all Americans. Scott's long-time membership in the NAACP and serv ice on t he At lanta NAACP board during the 1960 's and 1970's helped curtail forced busing in Atlanta. His leadershi p and theAtlanta Daily World ' s commitment to keep Auburn Avenue from being included in the urban renewal programs ofthe 1950's preserved a valuable piece of Atlanta's history. Scott' s Board memberships on behalf of Mutual Federal Savings Bank and the Auburn Avenue Merchants Association helped keep economic development in the area. Like his late mother, Emmeline Southall (affectionately called "Mama Scott"), he was a strong advocate for di sadvantaged boys and a supporter of the Carver Homes Boys Club and Butler Street YMCA. He was a founder of the Atlanta Consumer Club, the Bi-Partisan Voters League and the Lincoln-Douglass Republican Club.
Scott received numerous awards and recognitions for his civic work and contributions to journalism, including the Atlanta Black Journalists Pioneer Award and his induction to the African-American Newspaper Journalism Hall of Fame. He was a long-time member of the Atlanta Frontiers Club International, Inc. , Warren Memorial United Methodist Church and recipient of the Fulton County Republican Parti s Lifetime Service Award.
C.A. Scott was a lov ing husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was married nearly 57 years to the late Ruth Perry Scott of Social Circle, Georgia. The couple had two daughters, the late Jocelyn Scott Walker, who was a teacher and curriculum specialist in the Atlanta Public School System, and Portia A . Scott, an adjunct professor of Journalism at Clark Atlanta University, who worked closely with her father in the family business for thirty-two years. In addition to his daughter Portia, Scott is survived by: four grandchildren, Scott L. Walker, Steven L. Walker (Charlita S. Walker), Maryam Jordan (Demetrius Jordan) and Staci D. Walker; a greatgrandson, Nehemiah Cornelius Jordan; a sister, Ruth Scott Simmons and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
