Tbe Beginning
Willie Lee (W.L.) Scarbrough, Sr. was born to the proud parents of Charlie and Fannie Prince Scarbrough on July 29, 1912, in Columbus, Georgia.
Tbe Preparation
Rev. Scarbrough's formal education began in the public schools of Columbus, Georgia. A desire to further prepare himself academically, led him to enroll in Turner Seminary at Morris Brown College, where he received the Bachelor of Divinity Degree.
Tbe llsion
On July 26, 1936, Rev. Scarbrough married the lovely Ms. Georgia Jackson Hadley. They were friends and life partners in the ministry for sixty-four years. Together they reared one son, William.

In 1937, at Pitts Chapel A.M .E. Church, Columbus, Georgia, he began his ministry as a young preacher. He pastored many churches throughout Georgia and after 39 years of pastoring, in 1976, Rev. Scarbrough was appointed a Presiding Elder. He served in this position with much commitment and dignity and retired in 1994 as Presiding Elder of the Atlanta District.

The book of life was closed on Saturday, June 2, 2001, at approximately 8:26a.m. , at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia.

He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving wife, Mrs. Georgia Scarbrough; one son, Mr. W. L. Scarbrough, Jr., (Vernell), Atlanta; one brother, Mr. C. P. Scarbrough, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; one sister, Mrs. Mabel Bailey, Durham, Connecticut; and a host of nieces, nephews, fellow elders, fellow pastors and many, many A.M.E. congregations throughout the State of Georgia and the nation.

People like him, not because He was rich or known to fame; He had never won applause As a star in any game. His was not a brilliant style, His was not a forceful way, But he had a gentle smile And a kindly word to say.

Wasn't one to boast of gold Or belittle it with sneers, Didn 't change from hot to cold, Kept his friends throughout the years, Sort of man you like to 1neet Any time or any place. There was always something sweet And refreshing in his face.

Never arrogant or proud, On he went with manner mild; Never quarrelsome or loud, Just as simple as a child; Honest, patient, brave and true; Thus he lived from day to day, Doing what he found to do In a cheerful sort of way.

Sort of man you'd like to be: Balanced well and truly square; Patient in adversity, Generous when his skies were fair, Never lied to friend or foe, Never rash in word or deed, Quick to come and slow to go In a neighbor's time of need.

Never rose to wealth or fame, Simply lived, and simply died, But the passing of his name Left a sorrow, far and wide. Not for glory he 'd attained, Not for what he had ofpelf, Were the friends that he had gained, But for what he was himself.
