Herman Jerome "HJ" Russell, Sr., son of Maggie Goodson Russell and Rogers Russell, Sr., was born December 23, 1930. He was the youngest of eight children in the Summerhill Community of Atlanta, Georgia, a short distance from present-day Turner Field. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Charles, Ruby Carmichael, Robert, Viola Gresham, Lawrence, Clifford, and Rogers. He was a lifetime member of Allen Temple AME Church.
He credited his father, an independent plasterer, for teaching him the value of hard work and diligence. His spirit of entrepreneurship emerged early; he had a paper route and opened a shoeshine parlor while he was still in elementary school. He attended David T. Howard High School, and during summers worked with his father as a sub-contractor, learning to be a master tradesman and mechanic. He followed his father's advice to save a portion of every dollar earned, and by the ege of 16, saved enough money to purchase a vacant lot from the city of Atlanta, where he built his first rental property, a duplex.
After high school, HJ worked as a plasterer while earning a degree in building construction from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama (later Tuskegee University). He and his brother, Rogers Russell, worked together as sub-contractors, becoming too successful for the local sheriff, who HJ would say years later, "ran us out of town for taking so much business from the locals."
In 1952, while still a senior at Tuskegee, HJ established the business that would be known as H.J. Russell & Co. After graduation, he returned to Atlanta and began his career, providing real estate services that included plastering, property management, and construction.
HJ's sister-in-law introduced him to a classmate from Clark College (later Clark Atlanta University), and on August 18, 1956, he married Otelia Hackney. As Atlanta's social and political landscape experienced tremendous change during the decade of the 1960s, HJ and Otelia raised their three children, Donata, Jerome, and Michael, and developed strong relationships with many key individuals at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement, most notably Martin Luther King, Jr., and his family.
As H.J. Russell & Co. continued to grow and prosper through the 1960s, HJ's civic involvement brought him into lasting relationships with many of Atlanta's prominent politicians, business leaders and
2
Civil Rights activists including former Atlanta mayor, Ivan Allen, Jr.; former Georgia senator, Leroy Johnson; political activist, OV Williamson; and renowned Atlanta businessman, Jesse Hill, Jr. HJ was the first black member of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and later became the organization's second black president.
During the decade of the 1970s, HJ led his company through a period of diversification, expansion and continued real estate development. He became the largest single owner and manager of HUD apartments in Georgia, and he developed, owned and constructed over $150 million of real estate- all before he reached the age of 50. During that same period, he also acquired interests in Citizens Trust Bank; an ABC affiliate television station; a beverage distribution company; airport concessions; insurance and other ventures. He continued to work behind the scenes to create opportunities and eliminate barriers for African-Americans to succeed professionally. In 1973, he co-chaired the finance committee to elect Maynard Jackson as Atlanta's first black mayor, whose political and business practices were instrumental in bringing about economic equity to Atlanta's growing population of African-Americans.
Throughout the succeeding decades, HJ continued to expand his company's reach with project offices in various regions of the country and a host of landmark real estate developments including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Georgia Dome, Philips Arena, and Turner Field. He has served on numerous boards and became an active philanthropist, supporting a wide range of worthy causes.
HJ retired from H.J. Russell & Company in 2003, but continued to devote his energies to
his legacy projects in the Castleberry Hill area, which included Paschal's Restaurant. His favorite saying during that time was, "Now I only work 12 hours a day." In April of this year, HJ released his autobiography, Building Atlanta: How I Broke Through Segregation to Launch a Business Empire.
In 2006, Otelia, his wife of 50 years died. Later, HJ married Sylvia, then President of AT&T Georgia.
HJ Russell is survived by his wife, Sylvia; daughter, Donata Russell Major; sons H. Jerome (Stephanie) and Michael (Lovette); stepsons Eric and Kevin Anderson; eight grandchildren, Herman "Russ" Russell, Ill, Zane Major, Jr., Sydney Russell, Emanuei"Manny" Major, Mori Russell, Michael Russell, Jr., Benjamin Russell, Kelsey Russell, and a host of other relatives and friends.
3
As the youngest of eight children, with parents who nurtured and cared for him through challenging economic times, HJ Russell learned the value of sticking together as a family. He and his siblings grew up in the Summerhill Community during the '40s and '50s and attended Atlanta Public Schools. His father worked hard to support the family and modeled integrity, hard work and resilience in the face of adversity- values that were foundational in HJ's remarkable lifetime achievements.
Together with his wife, Otelia, a native of Union Point, Georgia, HJ brought those same values to bear on his children, Donata, Jerome, and Michael. A graduate of Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University), Otelia worked for a couple of years as an educator at The Georgia Avenue School before dedicating herself to raising her children in their home in the Collier Heights neighborhood. She became the bedrock of the family, managing the home front and attending her children's extracurricular activities.
In spite of their father's notable achievements in business and civic affairs, the Russell children never considered themselves privileged. They worked summer jobs to learn the value of hard work, responsibility and earning an income.
As HJ's children grew, married, and started their own families, their spouses were warmly welcomed into the Russell family. In their own words, "HJ was always a gentleman; he was always very embracing and loving. He never met a stranger, and he treated everyone who became part of the family as if they were one of his own children. He recognized everyone's talents and allowed them to celebrate that. He embellished every lesson with humor and compassion, and he was great at making connections with people. He left you feeling like you were one of his best friends."
In 2008, the Russells welcomed Sylvia and her sons Eric and Kevin into the family.
4
HJ Russell's entrepreneurial achievements are legendary, and Atlanta historians typically pair him with his late friend, Jesse Hill, Jr., former CEO of Atlanta Life Insurance Company, as the two most influential black business leaders of the past century. With Hill, HJ worked publicly and behind the scenes to improve the business environment for African Americans, opening doors and removing obstacles wherever possible.
HJ founded H.J. Russell & Company in 1952, initially providing plastering and property management services. His first major project was a development of 12 units on South Avenue in Atlanta. In 1962, H.J. Russell Construction Company was born and the following year, the 33-year old developer was awarded a coveted assignment- plastering the Atlanta/Fulton County Stadium. That same year, Herman Russell became the first African-American member of Atlanta's Chamber of Commerce.
Other high-profile commercial projects during the 1960s included Clark Atlanta University Bird Cage hotel apartments (1968); The Equitable Building (1968); and the Citizens Trust Bank Building (1969). In 1968, HUD began its building program, and H.J . Russell & Company quickly became one of the largest constructors of HUD housing in the Southeast. That same year, the H.J. Russell Plastering Company was awarded the fireproofing and plastering contract for the Equitable Building, the largest contract of its type ever for an African-American owned company.
In the 1970s as the national, state and local business environments shifted, so did the company, as it diversified its operations into other areas. With the development of several apartments, the firm grew its units to more than 1,000 in metro Atlanta. In that same decade, HJ founded City Beverage Company, a national beverage distributor, which was sold in 1984; became a stockholder in DDR International, Inc., a construction management firm; Russell-Rowe Communications, which owned Channel 24 in Macon, Georgia; and founded Concessions International, Inc., a food and beverage concessions firm with his partners Felker W. Ward, Jr. and Jesse Hill, Jr.
HJ also dived into the world of professional sports, buying 10% of the Atlanta Hawks professional basketball team and The Atlanta
6
The Atlanta Flames hockey team. He was the first AfricanAmerican to have ownership in a major sports franchise.
In 1972, the company was also awarded a subcontract for Colony Square, an innovative mixed-use retail and residential development in Midtown Atlanta. In 1975, the company won the contract to build the Ashby Street MARTA Station, adding a prominent transportation project to its rapidly expanding portfolio. The decade was capped with another coup, constructing the headquarters of Delta Airlines in 1979.
In 1980, HJ was elected President of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the second African-American to hold that post. In the early 80's, the firm landed a prime project in the Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport main terminal complex, the headquarters for Atlanta Life Insurance Company and was selected to bui ld the Georgia-Pacific headquarters in downtown Atlanta. A host of other projects that included educational, judicial, banking, recreational and headquarters facilities soon followed, including Atlanta Gas Light Headquarters (1986); Coca Cola headquarters (1987); Wachovia Bank Operations Center, W inston Salem, NC (1987); McGill Place Condominiums (1988); Delta Flight Operations Center (1989); Grady High School (1989); Atlanta City Hall Complex (1989); Fulton County Ja il (1989), and Lakewood Amphitheater (1989).
By 1989, H.J. Russell & Company's residential property development included more than 4,500 apartment units. Two years earlier, the company had renovated and expanded its own corporate offices to 42,000 square feet, to accommodate the growth in personnel.
The company continued to compete and win contracts both locally and nationally including the high-profile athletic facilities in downtown Atlanta: the Georgia Dome (1992); Centennial Olympic Stadium/Turner Field (1994), and Philips Arena (1999). Throughout the 2000s, H.J. Russell & Company has continued its forward progress, and most recently became involved in construction of the $1.3 billion Atlanta Falcons-stadium.
After fifty years at the helm of his company, HJ Russell retired from day-to-day operations and handed over the reins to his three children, who have all been active in the business for many years and in various capacities. Today, Jerome Russell serves as President, and Michael Russell as CEO of the company, while Donata Major continues as CEO of Concessions International and President of the Herman J. Russell Foundation.
7
Through his many civic and philanthropic contributions, HJ Russell championed community building in Atlanta. For HJ, building Atlanta was synonymous with strengthening the communities around the city by helping to create jobs, eliminating obstacles to opportunity, and fostering cooperation among Atlanta's business, civic and religious leaders. As his company grew and prospered, he embraced the biblical doctrine that "to whom much is given, much is required." Former U.S. Senator, Max Cleland, once credited HJ Russell with helping to heal the city, state and the nation, adding that, "Atlanta would be a different place if it weren't for Herman Russell."
During the turbulent years of the Civil Rights Movement, HJ committed himself to advancing the cause in the best way he could- through his business, civic and political influence. When civil rights activists spoke out forcefully for change, HJ joined other African American business leaders in providing advice and counsel, as well as financial and political support. At times, that support called for more personal involvement. When eighty-six college students were arrested for protesting segregation , HJ rushed to the police station and bailed them out with bonds secured by his Atlanta properties. In 1960, realizing the movement needed a unifying voice in Atlanta, HJ joined Jesse Hill, Jr., Dr. Clinton Warner, Jr., and O.V. Williamson in financing the Atlanta Inquirer, a newspaper devoted to unadulterated news from the frontlines.
HJ Russell cemented his legacy through civic leadership, serving on numerous boards including Central Atlanta Progress, the Butler Street YMCA, Citizens Trust Bank, the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP, Allen Temple AME Church, and the Business Council of Georgia. He became an active philanthropist, supporting a wide range of worthy causes including education in the form of multi-million-dollar pledges to Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Georgia State University, and his alma mater, Tuskegee University. He provided a million-dollar contribution to Grady Hospital at a time when the hospital was threatened by financial distress.
Along with other white and black business leaders, HJ helped to create the Atlanta Action Forum, which provided 6,500 summer jobs for at-risk youth. When the need arose for $30 million dollars to keep the Martin Luther King, Jr. papers in Atlanta, HJ was one of the business leaders who signed the note and recruited others to do the same. In 1991, he received the prestigious Horatio Alger Award, recognizing dedicated community leaders who demonstrate individual initiative and a commitment to excellence.

The Family of Herman J. Russell Saint Philip AME Church 240 Candler Road, SE Atlanta, Georgia 30317
Dear Sylvia and Family:
The loss of Herman J. Russell to this city is unspeakable. He was a great man who demonstrated with his life and his service the true meaning of duty, responsibility, philanthropy and public service. He was a visionary, an extraordinary man who lived in an extraordinary time in American history. To use the words made famous by Robert Kennedy, whose family we also remember on this day: There are those who look at things the way they are and ask why. Herman J. Russell dreamed of things that never were and said why not.
He was a builder with an unshakeable faith in the dignity of all humankind who believed that his determination and commitment could transform a small plastering shop into an architect of the Atlanta skyline, even in the segregated South. His answer to discrimination was to use the truth of his capability to destroy the myth of incapability. That is why his partnership with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. must have been destined to be. Herman Russell understood in the core of his very being what Dr. King was trying to accomplish, and he contributed whatever he had to advance the dream of the Beloved Community until the day he died .
He was a shrewd powerbroker who knew how to cut deals before the phrase was even coined. His father and mother taught him that hard work, unforgettable service, and excellent delivery were the keys to success, and Herman added his ability to create friendships despite the superficial walls society might put up. Herman Russell was a mentor and a role model to all of Atlanta leadership. He was the embodiment of the heart and soul of Atlanta, the very best that this nation has to offer. He was also my dear friend. There is no way to replace this great man who has done so much for this city and this nation. The rest of us are left forever trying to fill his awesome shoes.
My heart goes out to you and your family today. Know that the thoughts and prayers of all the people of the 5th Congressional District of Georgia are with you, seeking to hold you up in this difficult hour. May God bless you and surround you with His perfect peace and His ceaseless comfort as you travel through the dark days ahead. Please know that I am always at your service. If there is anything I can do to make this transition easier, please do not hesitate to let me know.

To: The Family and Friends of Mr. Herman J. Russell
Sandra joins me in conveying our deepest sympathy for the loss of Mr. Herman J. Russell. May you find strength and comfort in remembering the joy he brought to the lives of everyone who knew him.
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and renowned Atlantan, Mr. Russell will be missed by his many friends and family. His character is reflected in the loved ones that survive him. Although his passing is a somber occasion, I am confident that he will long be remembered and that his impact on others and our capital city will continue to be felt. Mr. Russell was a remarkable entrepreneur who built one of the most successful development and construction companies in the South. He showed true dedication to the highest standards of the real estate profession. Through his influence, Mr. Russell greatly contributed to the City of Atlanta and our state, including playing a major role in building the Atlanta Skyline we love today. In addition to his business endeavors, Mr. Russell involved himself in many philanthropic pursuits, exemplifying a great deal of compassion for his fellow citizens. I am both proud and honored this exceptional citizen called the great State of Georgia home.
I hope that cherished memories of moments spent with Mr. Russell will give you comfort during this time of grieving. Do not be saddened that he is gone; rather rejoice in the long, meaningful, prosperous life that he lived.

On behalf of the City of Atlanta, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the Russell fatnily on the loss of their loved one, Mr. Herman J. Russell.
Mr. Russell was one of the best men Atlanta has ever produced. He founded and led one of America' s most successful consttuction and real estate businesses. Through his work, he not only left a permanent imprint on the Atlanta skyline, he left a lasting legacy through the economic and social opportunity he created for all, and for AfricanAmericans in particular. He was also one of most significant leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, but he did so much of his work in quiet ways. When future histories of those turbulent years are written, I hope that the essential role Mr. Russell played in advancing the Movement will be fully recognized, as he takes his rightful place among our nation's leading figures.
Throughout his life, Mr. Russell showed an unwavering commitment to the progress of this city, and although he was a success by any measure, he never lost sight of the importance of helping those who were walking the path he had blazed for them. Few men have done more to make Atlanta a place where people of all races and backgrounds can bring and build their dreams. Mr. Russell was also a tremendous source of personal inspiration to me throughout my life. Outside of my family, he was my original example of a great man. I was in awe of him, and later, that admiration also came to include respect and love. I will miss him deeply.
Finally, while no words can express the depth of our sorrow and nothing will ever fill the void left by his passing, I hope we can all find solace in the Scripture that says, in John 14:1-3: "Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father' s house are many mansions ... I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself." We hope that time and memories will help lessen the burden of the Russell family's sorrow, and that they may draw some measure of comfort knowing that our city shares in their loss.

To the family of Herman J. Russell:
As leaders of the Metro Atlanta Chamber, we are proud to have been associates and friends of Herman Russell- your husband, father, grandfather or great-grandfather. We will always be his admirers.
Herman embodied that forward-looking spirit that helped define Atlanta. He was a leader in every endeavor he touched, whether business, charitable or civic. During the 1960s he was instrumental in the success of the civil rights movement because of his strong listening and unifying skills. At our own Chamber, Herman was the first African-American member and second African-American Chair of the Board. His business acumen brought people together to build landmarks and share the pride in them a hard-earned and much-deserved pride that was common under his leadership.
When asked about the key to success, Herman said this: "Stay focused, work hard and always realize that you have an obligation to society to give back." Under this philosophy he built rich legaciesincluding the family that he especially cherished and a successful construction and real estate firmwhich he now leaves behind for the continuing good of Atlanta and other communities.
We are deeply saddened by Herman's passing and offer our most heartfelt condolences. He is among a select few who will be remembered as an icon ofthe era in which Atlanta joined the world's great cities.

November 22,2014
To the Family of Mr. Herman J. Russell:
On behalf of The King Center, I join with everyone gathered to celebrate the life of a phenomenal man whose legacy and impact on the city of Atlanta will live on in perpetuity.
Mr. Russeii was a part of the "coloring of Atlanta" by using his influence and business prowess to open many doors for people of color and by keeping them open for those who followed behind him. He understood the sensitivities associated with navigating the political landscape of our great city and did so with an unassuming, quiet determination and spirit.
Despite his prodigious accomplishments as one of the great business leaders of our time, he remained a man of remarkable humility and selflessness. My father, Martin Luther King, Jr., and my mother regarded him as a dear friend and an important supporter of our freedom struggle, who often provided bail money and other support during the Civil Rights Movement. Indeed, my father often found a safe haven in the Russell home, where he could kick back, relax and fellowship.
As a member of our Board of Directors, Mr. Russell served as a valued advisor to our founder, Caretta Scott King. In that role, he was an integral part of the establishment of The King Center as the official living memorial to his friend, Dr. King. In recognition of his exceptional leadership, efforts to further humanity and his commitment to corporate social responsibility, The King Center presented our Salute to Greatness Award to Mr. Russell in 1985. He was not only a builder of our city's most impressive edifices, but also a builder of a more just and compassionate society and a builder of brotherhood and sisterhood in our community.
Years ago, my grandfather told a story about a man who took his sick daughter to a well-known doctor. The line at the doctor' s office was longer than normal, so the man pushed his way through the crowd only to find a sign on the door that read, "Still in business. Just moved upstairs." I believe that Mr. Russell is "upstairs" and that he is still in the construction business. Why do I believe this? In John 14:2, Jesus says " In my Father' s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." I imagine that Mr. Russell is now president of the Lord's Construction Company, still building, still doing the Lord's bidding, as he helps Him build those mansions. There, he joins a host of his beloved friends, including my mother and father, Maynard Jackson, Jesse Hill and Evelyn Lowery. They are challenging those of us who are left behind to pick up the mantle, continue the freedom struggle and teach the next generation. Let's rise to that challenge!
In closing, as we celebrate his life with loving remembrances, we pray that Herman J. Russell's luminous example of compassionate civic leadership will inspire future generations of business leaders. His legacy will surely live on in our hearts as we continue his quest to build the Beloved Community. Our prayers and thoughts remain with you, his family.

As we pause to reflect on the life our beloved HJ, it becomes clear that he belonged to a much larger circle of people than our immediate family. As so many have said, he never met a stranger, and his reputation and influence extends far beyond his close friends, his business associates, and the citizens of Atlanta. He loved this city and left a tangible mark on its landscape but also an intangible spirit of entrepreneurship, compassion, and working together to strengthen the foundations of Atlanta's communities. All of you who came to know and love him during his 83 years must certainly share in our loss and join us in celebrating his remarkable life. Over the past few days, we have heard from so many of you, and your kind words and remembrances have helped to lift us up and give us strength.
To each of you, we say thank you.
