THOMAS RIVERS wasborntoPeolaRiversonDecember31, 1932. He was raised on the near northside of Chicago. Tommie attended Edward Jenner Elementary School, Wells High (where he was a saxophonist in the band) and Wright Junior College. Immediately following graduation from Wright, Tommie was inducted into the United States Anny, where he served as an M.P. in Austria.
Tommie's Christian teachings were initiated at Wayman A.M.E. Church.
AfterTommie's discharge from the service, he returned home and continued his education at Roosevelt University and Chicago Technical College, where he sought a degree in civil engineering. During this period, he also returned to work at Johnson Candy Factory, utnil he joined the work force at A.T. & T. as an associate engineer. Tommie retired from A.T. & T. on August 9, 1991.
Tommie and Irene married on Aprill7, 1964.
In 1986, Tommie changed his church home to Grant Memorial A.M.E. Church, where he was an active member. He was a member of the E.L. Wilburn Sunday School Class, WHG Club and supported the YPD 'ers in all of their endeavors.
Tommie entered the Damen Avenue Veterans' Administration Hospital on May 13, 1993. On June 24, 1993 at 7:55p.m., the angels visited Tommie and called him to his Father's house. His soul winged its flight from this world of sorrow, sickness and pain to a place of eternal rest
Tommie leaves to mourn: a loving and ever-vigilant wife, Irene; a son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren, Allen and Deborah, Brandon and Danielle of California; his mother, Peola Rivers; a maternal aunt, Jean RiversPolk; nieces, Deborah, Cecelia and Michele ofMiami, Aorida; a brother-in-law, Leon of Miami, Aorida; a host of relatives, friends and a godson, Melvin Keith Eiland.
