Born on the 14th day of July 1948, Louvenia was the only child of Clarence Duncan and Mamie Grimes Duncan, both preceding her in death. Louvenia was raised in a loving home and regularly enjoyed the benefits of an extended family. With the love of a step-mother, Gertrude Duncan and a step-sister, Gertrude Virgilene Johnson, and several close cousins who were like brothers and sisters; Louvenia never really experienced the life of nor felt like "an only child."
Louvenia received her education from St. Paul of the Cross Elementary School, a private boarding school in Lafayette, LA and Drexel Catholic High School and later Booker T. Washington High School, receiving her diploma in 1966. Thereafter, she became one of the first African-American stewardesses to work for Delta Airlines. She enjoyed flying and traveling and, through her employment, was able to interact with many people around the country and the world. She had the opportunity to meet "the right people" and even landed an acting role in the movie "Lenny Bruce."
Louvenia married the late Leon "Bobby" Richie and, as a result of that union, gave birth to Robert Clarence Richie. A second marriage to Thomas V. Holcombe Ill extended her family to five (5) sons and two (2) daughters. For many years, Louvenia worked as a Tax Examiner for the Georgia Department of Revenue, but her passion was always cooking, catering, and planning and hosting exquisite parties. She "inherited" her mother's expertise and skill for knowing how to cook not only an "old fashioned Southern meal" but also a diverse array of exotic cuisine enjoyed by all. Louvenia could be found in her kitchen (and her mother's kitchen) on any Saturday or Sunday morning preparing "family meals" not only for her immediate family but for her extended family as well.
Family was tremendously important to Louvenia and she cared for her ailing mother, even despite her own failing health. Louvenia learned and practiced the value of "family first" and exhibited that characteristic continuously by hosting and cooking for family on holidays, birthdays and many other special occasions. For the 51 years that the Grimes Reunions have taken place, Louvenia enjoyed participating in and organizing the annual Family Reunions. From her mother, uncles and aunts, she learned the skills required to ensure that reunions were well-organized and enjoyable. Louvenia played a key role ensuring the success of family reunions held in Atlanta, Georgia.
Louvenia will be remembered and eternally loved by her husband, Thomas V. Holcombe Ill, her sons and daughters, Robert Clarence Richie (LaTonya), Toni Holcombe Crowder (Keith) of District Heights, Maryland, Beryl Sutton, Roderick Holcombe, Rodney Holcombe, Thomas V. Holcombe IV (Dykeisha) and Tony Holcombe, a devoted mother-in-law, Dorothy Richie, two (2) aunts, Mrs. Elenora Adams (Samuel) of Waycross, Georgia and Mrs. Betty Grimes of Tuscumbia, Alabama, four (4) grandchildren, Robert C. Richie II, Keisha Carnes (Genna), Emmanuel Stith, Taylor Holcombe, two (2) great grandchildren, Tia Stith and Landis Jackson and a host of cousins and friends.
