OBITUARY
Dr. Harry V. Richardson of Atlanta, founder and first president of the Interdenominational Theological Center at Atlanta University, died at his home in his sleep early Thursday morning, December 13, 1990. He was 89. He had been in failing health in recent months.
Dr. Richardso~ established the Interdenominational Theological Center, which opened in 1958, and served as its president until his retirement in 1968. The lTC seminaries represent six denominations; the United Methodist, African Methodist Episcopal, Baptist, Church of God in Christ, Presbyterian and Christian Methodist Episcopal. The lTC has been a leader in education of black ministers for three decades, although its students have not been exclusively black.
Harry Van Buren Richardson was born June 27, 1901, in Jacksonville, Florida, the son of Martin Richardson, who was in construction work, and Bertha Witsell Richardson. He was graduated from \Vestern Reserve University and Harvard Divinity School, and received a Ph.D. degree from Drew University. Dr. Richardson was the Chaplain1 \of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama from 1932 until 1948. He led effortsf to develop a statewide interracial ministers' alliance that was a catalyst for ecumenical interracial services at Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University.
In 1948, Dr. Richardson moved to Atlanta to become president of Gammon Theological Seminary. He met here in March 1956 with Dean Rusk, then the director of the General Education Board, a Rockefeller foundation. Dr. Richardson and Mr. Rusk discussed the proposed educational center and the funding it would require.
A $15,000 study grant was provided, followed by approval of a $2.25 Million grant. An Atlanta organizational committee within a year raised $250,000. The lTC opened in 1959 as part of the Atlanta University complex.
He later wrote of his work at lTC in the book Walk Together, Children. "My concern in race relations has been not only to break down barriers but also to build good will and understanding, so that when the barriers fall, there will be a foundation to start from," Dr. Richardson said in the 1979 newspaper article.
Surviving are his wife, Selma Theodocia White Richardson, a brother, Benjamin Richardson of Watertown, Massachusetts, and a sister, Betty Bazier of Atlanta.

"From All The Saints"
W.W.How
For all the saints who from their labors rest, Who Thee by faith before the world confessed Thy name, 0 Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia!
Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might; Thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight. Thou,
in the darkness drear, their one true light. Alleluia!
0 blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine. Alleluia!
From earth's wide bounds, from oceans's farthest coast, Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Alleluia!
