A Profile ofthe Life of
Reverend Dr. Jobnny C. Reynolds
Johnny C. Reynolds is a Georgian by birth. He was born and reared in Sparta, Hancock County, Georgia. He was the first of six children. His parents, James and Cora Reynolds, were strict disciplinarians who instilled in their children the strong need for religious values. His life reflected that teaching.
Reverend Dr. Reynolds experienced a successful ministry as pastor of Turner Monumental Mrican Methodist Episcopal Church, Atlanta, Georgia. He enjoyed the privilege of leading God' s people. His humane philosophy and his capacity for understanding others, as well as his tireless efforts to serve the people, were qualities which endeared him to all. He was a highly respected pastor and leader. Dr. Reynolds possessed a rare quality of being able to unite into a cohesive body of believers those under his leadership, mainly because of his close and personal contact with his members. His ministry was a passionate part of his life. His sincerity, coupled with his integrity, earned him the admiration of many.
Dr. Reynolds served the Lord and the A.M.E. Church for more than thirty one ( 31) years: Davis Chapel, Forest Park; Kings Chapel, Hillsbury; St. Paul, Indian Springs; St. James, Monticello; St. Peter, Fort Valley; Turner Monumental, Atlanta.
Dr. Reynolds had a burning desire to prepare himself better for his ministry; therefore, he enrolled in Morris Brown College, Atlanta in 1972. He received a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in Business Management. In 1976, he felt a need to continue his education at Turner Theological Seminary, Atlanta, receiving the Master of Divinity Degree. Still having the desire to continue his studies, he enrolled in Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, where he earned the Doctor of Ministry Degree.
Dr. Reynolds' work experiences were varied and successful. His career with the Metropolitan Atlanta Transit Authority (MARTA) began in 1966, following his service in the United States Marine Corps. He was first hired by MARTA as a bus operator. He served as a bus operator from 1966 to 1978. As a result of the trust and confidence of his co-workers, he was elected President of the Amalgamated Transit Union (Local 732 ), which was indicative ofhis keen leadership skills. His knowledge ofunions, negotiating, lobbying and supervising earned him the presidency for five terms.
Dr. Reynolds' unquestionable successful career on a local level brought forth favorable results. He was elected Vice President of the International Amalgamated Transit Union, based in Washington, D.C.
Numerous honors and awards were received, including "Man of the Year in Labor," "Labor Leader of the Year" and the "Harold I. Bearden Achievement Award in Religion."
Reverend Dr. Reynolds was married to Mrs. Doris Reynolds. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather to their children. He was a champion of whatever he endeavored. He demonstrated his warmhearted humanity and deep concern for those he served by rendering unselfish, unceasing service and devotion throughout his life.
Dr. Reynolds' memories will be cherished by: his wife, Doris C.
