Man1ie Alice Bynes. Rees~ the second child of the late .Henry S. and Sarah Jenkins Bynes_, was born in Macon_, Georgia_, Septelnber 3) 1911.

Mrs. Reese attended elementary and high school in Macon) Georgia. She ntatriculated at Spelman College) Atlanta) Georgia-' where she received her Bachelor ofScience Degree. She was conferred the Master of Science
Degree by Drake University) Des Moines) Iowa. Advanced study was done at
Ohio State University) the University ofSouthern California) Sin11t1ons University and Boston University.
A Time To Live
Mrs. Ruse was married to the late Dr. William J. Reese) who preceded her in death in 1971. Mrs. Ruse travelled extensively throughout the United States_, Canada) Mexico) several ofthe Caribbean Islands) as well as in Europe and Africa.

Mrs. Ruse began her teaching career at Center High School) Waycross_, Georgia; she also taught at the Des Moines Technical High School in Iowa. She was Home Denwnstration Agent in Baker and Burke Counties. For twenty-Jive years_, she was Dean ofW01tlm and Associate Professor ofEducation at Albany State College) Albany_, Geo'l}ia.
Mrs. Reese was the 17th President of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs) Inc. While in this capacity) President and Mrs. Lyntkm B. Johnson invited her eleven times to White House activities.
Gtwernor Lester Maddox chose her as a delegate to the 1968 Detnocratic
National Convention_, where she served on the Credentials Conm1ittee. In 1973) Governor ]in1n1y Carter) later President Carter) appointed
Mamie to a seven year tem1 on the State Board of Pardons and Paroles. Her colleagues on the Board later elected her chair) the highest position at
that tinu ever attained by a Black in State governntent. At an early age, Mrs. Reese becatne affiliated with Pleasant Grove
Baptist Church_, Macon_, Georgia. She later beca111e a nuntber ofHines Menwrial CME Church_, Albany_, Georgia_, where she served as President of the General Missionary Society for four years. She served as a teacher at the CME Church State Leadership School at Paine College_, Augusta_, Georgia; and at the Annual Missionary Institute at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta. While living in Atlanta_, she became affiliated with Butler Street CME Church.
Anwng her professional organizational affiliations were: the Georgia Association ofEducators_, the National Education Association_, Signta Rho Signu;r, Honor Society; the Board ofTrustees_, Morris Brown College_, Atlanta_, Geot;!Jia; the Auxiliary to the Geot;EJia and National M.edical Association; the National Mental Health Association_, and Delta Sig11ta Theta Sorority_, Inc. Her civic activities carried her to the White House and the Pentagon; they also put her in demand as a speaker for educational_, religious_, and civic
groups. She received 11zany honors. Anwng them were the following: In 1958,
she and her husband_, Dr. Reese, were honored by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority as "Couple of the trear. '' In 1963, she was appoi11,ted by then Governor Carl
Sanders to serve as one of the 100 Georgia wonun on the Governor's
Commission on the Status of Women. She was one ofonly 4 Blacks chosen. Governor Sanders later appointed her to the United States Circuit Judge Nominating Commission. In 1966, Spelman College honored her as Outstanding Alumna. Albany State College and the Con1n1unity Relations
Committee honored her for "Outstanding Cmn-n1unity Service," and the
"Ram," the Albany State College trearbook, was dedicated to her. Mamie was listed in several publications, including Who's Who Anwno American Women (1967).

her memory one sister_, Celestine Franklin_, Macon_, Georgia; four nieces, Mrs.
Vernistine Murphy (Walter), and Mrs. LaVerta Ha111pton (Darius), Atlanta, Georgia; Ms. Cheryl jackson, and Mrs. Lafuana Hollins, Macon,
Georgia; two aunts, several great nieces and nephews; and nmny other
relatives and endeared friends.
