Mother Jessie M. Pittman or "Big Ma" as she was affectionately called, was born on July 20, 1926. She was the youngest of three girls born to the late Arthur and Ada Boyd Turner of Hampton, Georgia. Her sister, Mother Nellie Ruth Eason, precedes her in death. Jessie Mae attended school in Love Joy at The Hall in Clayton County and Cleveland Chapel in Henry County.
She joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church at an early age in 1937 under the leadership of Reverend H.M. Alexander where she sang in the choir for years. She was presently serving on the Mother Board. Her union to Richard Pittman bore twin girls.
The Lord sent His angels to carry Mother Pittman home on Thursday, September 16, 2010.
She leaves to cherish her memory: two loving and devoted daughters, Jerrie Jones and Joyce Smith (Richard); three adoring grand children, Venessa Walker (Michael), Russell Jones (Julia) and Richard Smith, Jr. (Mae);five greatgrandchildren, Maurice, Jasmine, Jahada, Evita and Rachel; one great-great grandchild, Saniya; one sister, Mother Fannie L. Turner; a devoted nephew and niece, Leonard Turner (Diane) and Jeanette Turner;four other loving nieces, Nokomis Perry, Gaynell Evans (Gregory), Wanda Braithwaite (Milton) and Olga Mangum; and a host of other relatives and friends.
