Don't spend too much time in mourning Tears are for the sad I left to be with Jesus
and that should makeyou glad Don't wasteyour hours in grieving,
No need to feel distress
I was tired of life sfrustrations;
I had to get some rest. Don'tfret because my leaving came in such a wqy We will have another meeting in Gods eternal dqy.

Mother Opal Lee Lemon Phelps was born April 22, 1922 to the late Frank and Amanda Lemon. She was the fourth of ten children, seven of which preceded her in death. She was married to the late Thomas Floyd Phelps and to this union four children were born: Tommie Lee, Lorenzo, Barbara Ann and Mary Helen. She became a widow in 1948 at the age of 26 with four small children. Always looking for ways to improve her circumstances, her surroundings, and particularly herself, she enrolled in a school of cosmetology and became a licensed beautician in 1966 and opened her own
shop.

At an early age Mother Phelps accepted Christ as her personal

Lord and Savior and joined the Mount Olive Baptist Church.

During her time at Mt. Olive, she was instrumental in establishing

the Baptist Training Union (BTU) and Vacation Bible School

(VBS), many times being the first to arrive and last to leave. She

served in several capacities including president of the Mother

Board, Directress of BTU, Coordinator for VBS, and other

auxiliaries. She provided transportation for the children to attend

local associations and conventions; she visited with her neighbors

f

and witnessed to them about Jesus, encouraging them to attend

e

church.

Mother Phelps was always willing to help her family, church, and the community in any way she could. She would collect food and

0

clothes to distribute to people in need, using one of the bedrooms in her home as the storage and distribution center. She also

f

provided transportation to neighbors whenever needed. In addition to raising her children Mother Phelps also raised her

s

nieces, Gloria and Virginia and nephew, Alton. After the death of

e

her niece, Virginia, she raised her two grand nephews, Elbert and Jerry and grand niece, Felicia. She was also a surrogate

r

grandmother to Marcus and Shawn Byars, Cynthia Davis and her

v

family, Felicia Saunders and her family and Tavarus Heard and his

J

family.
