Obituary
Harmon Griggs Perry enjoyed a long career as an award-winning photojournalist and writer, chronicling African-American life in Atlanta.
He was born at Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital. Mr. Perry graduated from E. A. Ware Elementary School in 1935
and from Booker T. Washington High School in 1941. He
served in the U.S. Army for four years, spending a year in the Philippines. Back home after his honorable discharge in 1946, he began working as a free-lance photographer. He joined the staff of The Atlanta Daily World in 1950.
Mr. Perry made history in 1968 when he became the first black reporter to be hired by The Atlanta Journal . His first assignment for The Journal was covering the assassination and funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After leaving the paper in 1973, he became Southeastern Bureau Chief for Jet magazine and later returned to free-lancing. He devoted his career to telling the stories of black people from all walks of life.
He received many awards and honors for his work, including four Georgia Press Association Awards and the Photographer of the Year Award in 1978 by Atlanta Women in the Media. He was one of the founders of the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists.
Mr. Perry is survived by two daughters, Phillippa Maffett and Phyllis Perry, both ofAtlanta; aunt, The Reverend Laura Branch of Atlanta; two grandsons, one great-grandson; several cousins, including Ruth B. Morton of Atlanta; and many other family and friends.
