Bryant (Bryan) Cedric Pates was born October 30, 1965 in Chicago, Illinois to Mary and Willie (Bill) Pates. He departed this life on May 30, 2014.
He attended Benjamin Harrison Elementary School in South Bend, Indiana and in 1978 he was baptized at the Berean Seventh-Day Adventist Church in South Bend, Indiana and his family moved to Huntsville, Alabama where
he continued his middle school and high school years at Oakwood Academy. He graduated from Oakwood
Academy in 1984. Bryan loved sports and was blessed to get a basketball scholarship to Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. He also attended the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Bryan and Wanda Jones were married December 1, 2003. Never was there a more devoted, supportive,
compassionate, and God-fearing wife. She loved him and she never left his side throughout his illness. Wanda truly
enjoyed all the laughter they shared together.
Bryan's career included working as a technician at Humana and Crestwood Hospitals, and Huntsville Cancer Center for Dr. Parker Griffith. He also worked at Dunlap and was even a local truck driver for Huntsville Freight.
Bryan's charismatic personality and his big bright smile, won him many friends. When he was in the area, everybody knew it. One of the joys of his life was his beautiful ten year old daughter Bryanna. She loved her daddy dearly.
One of the favorite places she enjoyed going with her Dad was Southern Adventures where he wore a tailored white suit (so Bryan). Bryan loved mentoring and encouraging youth. He enjoyed and had a passion for coaching youth in various communities. He had a great impact on the lives of so many young people that he came in contact with
throughout his life. He had a caring heart and helped many when he saw a need. He formed the Pates Foundation
and the purpose was to help provide resources to others with health challenges that they could not provide for themselves, such as rides to medical appointments and encouragement by just sitting and talking to those who were alone while receiving treatments. Not only did he have a love for sports and mentoring, he also had exquisite taste for cars and attire. He always dressed with impeccable taste. He was a member of the Huntsville Untouchables Corvette Club and was honored in 2013 in recognition of his support to the club. He was also a member of the ICCC, a national corvette club. As for sports, he was awarded the Oakwood College Academy MVP 1983 & 1984 award for being the only eighth-grade varsity player.
Bryan faced his illness with incredible courage and with a positive attitude. His outlook on life was so contagious
that it encouraged others to have a positive outlook as well.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory: his loving and devoted wife, Wanda Gones) Pates; daughter, Bryanna
White Pates; stepson, Shaun Jones; granddaughter, Alaysia Jones; mother, Mary Pates; father, Willie Pates, all of Huntsville, AL; six siblings: Beltha (Zeb) Hinton, Reginald (Diana) Pates, Belinda (Michael) Pates-McComb, all of Huntsville, AL, Timothy (Dedra) Pates, Mesa, AZ, George (Candice) Pates, North Augusta, SC, Janet Pittman, South Bend, IN; one uncle: Dr. Arlester (Bernice) McBride, Huntsville, AL; aunts: Ruth Lee, Delores Walker, South Bend, IN, Mary Ann McBride, Chicago, IL, Eamestine Toney, Angela Morton, Huntsville, AL, Joyce Rayner, M emphis, TN; father-in-law, Green Robert Jones, mother-in-law, Mattie Jones; two brother-in-laws Darryl Jones and Keith (Wendy) Jones, all of Huntsville, AL; seven nephews and two nieces, one great-niece and a host of relatives. Bryan had a huge heart and welcomed many into his close circle. His memory will also be cherished by
these very close special friends who are like family to him.
