Lee Nidus Murphy, Jr. was born October 2, 1948 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the second of three children born to Lee Nidus and Mabel Bronson Murphy.
Lee, along vvith his sisters, grew up in Friendship Baptist church where he joined the church at the age of 10 and was baptized at eleven on Thanksgiving Day by Rev. Samuel Williams. He participated in Sunday school, the children's and youth choirs, Christmas and Easter plays and summer vacation Bible school. He was educated in the Atlanta Public Schools. In the fourth grade, his parents allowed him to participate in the Herndon Elementary School Band. He wanted to play the guitar, but his father wanted him to play the trumpet like Louis Armstrong. This instrument became the love of his life and he never regretted that decision.
In high school, he played in the Henry MeNeal Turner High School Band and played the third trumpet solo part in 'Bugler's Holiday'. During those years, Lee bought albums featuring great trumpeters and would play along with them matching their sound and musicianship. He loved music and had a deep appreciation for all genres. To live with Lee was to be exposed to classical music, jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock. He fancied himself a music trivia buff and loved challenging questions concerning music.
After high school, Lee was employed by the Atlanta Police Department. Later, he was drafted and joined the Marines. After returning home, he left the Atlanta
Police Department and began working for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority. He, also, enrolled and graduated from Morehouse College, fulfilling his father's wish. In an effort to broaden his horizons, he obtained a real estate license and worked for his friend at Jon Browne and Associates. Lee retired from MARTA as the Claims Manager with 30 plus years of service.
God allowed Lee to live a good life. He traveled, ran the Peachtree Road Race several times, spoke at local school career day activities, performed with the Friendship Baptist Church Retirees Choir, and supported his high school and college reunions. He continued his love of playing music by actively participating 1n the Atlanta Metropolitan Community Band, the African American Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Peachtree Wind Ensemble. He enjoyed live concerts featuring great artists and it was at one of these that he met his idol, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. He loved his family, his friends, his church, his co-workers, MSNBC, movies, reading, Muhammad Ali and the Dallas Cowboys.
Lee is survived by his son, Damani; daughter, Andria; adored granddaughter, DeLa; sisters, Mabel Goe) and Gail; nephews, Joseph and Samuel Oden; niece, Cheryl Bryant and grand niece, I<insley Oden. He leaves to mourn him a host of cousins and many dear loving friends, neighbors, prayer warriors, and former co-workers.
